Biography

Sanil is a local principal in the Intellectual Property & Technology Practice Group in Baker McKenzie Wong & Leow. Sanil is qualified in both Singapore and Australia, and is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/A) by the International Association of Privacy Professionals.

Sanil is recognized as a Rising Star by both Legal 500 Asia Pacific in the Intellectual Property: Local Firms category as well as by IP Stars for his advisory work in the IP space. Sanil is also recommended by World Trademark Review 1000 for IP enforcement, litigation, prosecution and strategy.

Practice Focus

Sanil specializes in intellectual property and technology law, representing and advising local, regional and multinational clients in contentious and non-contentious matters in respect of trade mark, copyright, patent and design protection and enforcement issues. He advises on the commercialization of IP and related technology and commercial matters, including licensing, franchising, transactions, privacy, data protection, cybersecurity, e-commerce, media, content and regulatory issues. Sanil also advises organizations on India inbound and outbound matters on various intellectual property, technology and commercial issues.

Sanil provides legal, commercial and strategic advice to high-profile clients to manage trade mark portfolios, including trade mark selection, clearance searches and trade mark prosecutions and oppositions in protecting key product launches and brand-strengthening initiatives in Asia Pacific. He also advises clients on IP- and technology-related transactions, and planning and executing IP enforcement and anti-counterfeiting strategies.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Successfully overcoming objections raised by various Trade Mark Offices in Asia Pacific and globally to proceed trade mark applications to registrations and successfully managing oppositions to protect and enhance trade mark portfolios, including for one of the largest global technology companies and a major FMCG company.
  • Advising in relation to the commercialization of IP, including negotiating and drafting agreements relating to the use or sale of trade marks and intellectual property license agreements, assignments, franchising and distribution agreements.
  • Representing global brand companies in anti-counterfeiting and IP enforcement matters, including claims of trade mark infringement, copyright infringement and passing off.
  • Acting for a telecommunications company in patent-infringement proceedings relating to video and GPS technology in mobile networks.
  • Advising clients in the enforcement of trade mark rights, including taking action against third-party use of similar marks and negotiating settlement agreements.
  • Drafting and advising in respect of a suite of commercial agreements in Asia Pacific for a healthcare company covering numerous commercial, intellectual property, privacy and security issues.
  • Advising, reviewing and preparing agreements in respect of e-commerce, blockchain, regulatory and commercial issues relating to an innovative trading platform.
  • Advising on various transactional matters, including asset and share acquisition and restructuring deals, and reviewing and preparing documents relating to the transaction covering intellectual property and regulatory issues.
  • Advising and implementing anti-counterfeiting and anti-piracy programs for multinational clients in a variety of industry sectors, including dealing with seizures by customs authorities and successfully obtaining declarations, injunctions and compensation.
  • Managing and conducting searches to determine the availability for use and/or registration of trade marks in Asia Pacific, including in the context of key product launches and brand-strengthening initiatives.
