Baker McKenzie Wong & Leow and HHP Law Firm, the Singapore and Indonesia member firms of Baker McKenzie, advised Sembcorp Utilities Pte. Ltd. and PT PLN Nusantara Renewables (NR) on its joint venture and investment in Nusantara Sembcorp Solar Energi (NSSE) Power Plant.

The launch of the NSSE Power Plant, which combines a 50MW solar farm with a 14.2MWh battery energy storage system, will be Indonesia’s first utility-scale integrated solar and energy storage project and marks Sembcorp’s first venture into large-scale solar development in Indonesia.

The cross-border Baker McKenzie team was led by Finance & Projects Principals Ang Kim Hock (Singapore) and Andrew Zaw (Singapore), who were supported by HHP Law Firm Partners Mita Guritno, Nadia Soraya (Jakarta) and Local Principal Simonette Santos (Singapore) and Associate Partner Agung Wijaya (Jakarta).

Kim Hock commented, “We are honoured to partner Sembcorp and PLN NR on this groundbreaking renewable energy infrastructure project for Indonesia’s new capital city. This transaction provides a valuable template to inform future clean energy investment across ASEAN by enhancing project bankability through an innovative legal framework that balances investor protection with national priorities.”

Andrew commented, "This project showcase the strength of our cross-border team and ability to deliver end to end solution for the project. We are proud to have supported the sponsors in structuring a transaction that not only advances Indonesia's renewable energy goals but also sets new benchmarks and practices for project financing and timely financial close."
Nadia added, “We are proud to have played a role in structuring this transformative project that enhances Indonesia’s energy security while advancing its climate goals. By incorporating innovative technology and global best practices, the NSSE Power Plant not only addresses Nusantara's long-term energy needs but also establishes new benchmarks for sustainable infrastructure development across the region.”

The transaction adds to a growing list of significant clean energy deals that Baker McKenzie has acted on across Asia Pacific. Recent deals include Enilive’s joint venture with PETRONAS and Euglena to develop a biorefinery in Malaysia, Gulf Energy Development’s USD 820 million loan for 12 renewable energy projects in Thailand and the Bank of Fukuoka’s JPY 5.3 billion green loan for the Maibara Solar Power Project in Japan.
