Baker McKenzie has been awarded “Banking & Finance Team of the Year” at the Middle East Legal Awards 2022, the region’s premier legal awards, hosted in Dubai on 12 May 2022.

The award comes off the back of the USD 3 billion sustainable financing facility provided to the Egyptian Government, acting through the Ministry of Finance. The Ministry of Finance was advised by a cross-border team from Baker McKenzie’s Dubai and Cairo offices. The financing represents the first green financing for the Government of Egypt and the deal also won “Islamic Syndication Deal of the Year” at the Bonds, Loans & Sukuk Middle East Awards 2022.

The Baker McKenzie Banking & Finance deal team was led by partner Sandeep Puri in Dubai and partners Mohamed Ghannam and Lamyaa Gadelhak from Cairo, supported by counsel Victoria Long and associates Farah Abed and Mohamed ElHarmy.

Sandeep Puri, Head of Banking & Finance at Baker McKenzie in Dubai, commented: “We are delighted to have been awarded “Banking & Finance Team of the Year” at this year’s Middle East Legal Awards. This award is a testament to the hard work of our talented and committed banking teams across the region and our ability to work together on high profile and strategic mandates for our clients, including the landmark sustainable financing for the Government of Egypt. Our sincere thanks to Legal Week and ACC MENA for this prestigious award and many congratulations to all the winners and teams involved.”

With the awards targeting the region’s developing areas of diversity and ESG, Baker McKenzie was also named a finalist for “Championing Diversity in Private Practice” led by Keri Watkins, senior lawyer and Chair of Baker McKenzie’s Middle East Inclusion & Diversity Committee. The Firm was also a finalist for “Arbitration Team of the Year”, “Corporate Team of the Year: General” and “Real Estate Team of the Year” and individually, Sally Kotb, counsel in Baker McKenzie’s Arbitration practice, was shortlisted for the “Rising Star Award”.

Now in their 10th year, the Middle East Legal Awards celebrate the outstanding achievement and best practice among law firms and in-house legal teams in the region. The annual awards are hosted by Legal Week and the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) MENA.
