Biography

Julie Van thienen is a senior associate in the Employment Practice Group of Baker McKenzie's Brussels office. She joined the Brussels bar in 2015 and Baker McKenzie in 2020. In 2023, she attended an associate training programme (ATP) at Baker McKenzie's London office.

Practice Focus

Julie advises local and international companies on all aspects of individual and collective employment law and social security law. She is skilled in both litigation and advisory work. Julie has strong experience in transfers of undertakings, compensations and benefits, discrimination law, and drafting of social documents (such as employment contracts and working regulations rules). She works with companies in a variety of sectors and industries.

In addition, Julie focuses on all aspects of immigration and the global mobility of executives.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Advised a leading data, insights and consulting company with the planning of all legal aspects of a split and sale of part of their business including advice on information and consultation requirements and assistance with formalizing the change of employer for employment related benefits, harmonization of terms of employment and immigration related requirements (e.g. single permits).

  • Assisted multinational companies with the spinning-off of some of their activities, mainly covering all types of Belgian employment law topics relating to (automatic) transfer of employees, including works council information and consultation, negotiations with the trade unions on a collective bargaining agreement, analysis of impact on the employee representative bodies structure, employee communication, benefit aspects, working regulations and policies, etc.

  • Advised a global retail group with the employment aspects of a challenging corporate group restructuring project involving multiple legal entities across the globe.

  • Advised a number of high-profile clients in the tech sector on complex employment work, including legal advice on working with subcontractors in Belgium (obligations related to wellbeing at the workplace and compliance with the social legislation by subcontractors (including working time and rest time and payment of salaries).

  • Assisted a digital company with ongoing day-to-day support to the internal employment counsels on a broad range of delicate Belgian employee matters and employee benefit topics, review of complex cross border innovative global HR policies, as well as assistance with complex compensation schemes, employee benefit policies, compliance audits, complex equity plan rights and discrimination issues in the context of equity plans.

  • Advised a number of high-profile clients in the logistics, security and food sectors on complex immigration work.

  • Advised a large number of clients on compliance with the new whistleblowing legislation.
