John McGovern
Biography
Practice Focus
John advises on a range of UK and EU privacy law issues, including transparency and consent requirements, ePrivacy, data protection impact assessments and data subject rights. He has a particular interest in adtech and works regularly with advertisers, publishers and intermediaries. He has recently been helping clients to assess the data protection implications of Brexit, particularly in relation to international data transfers and determination of lead supervisory authority. Together with Baker McKenzie colleagues, he assists clients in understanding international privacy law developments, including the CCPA, for their European and global operations.
John is also involved in negotiating a range of commercial agreements and advising on ecommerce and consumer law matters. He provides support with the commercial and technology aspects of large corporate transactions. He regularly acts for clients in the new media sector, including platforms, on privacy, consumer and intellectual property law matters. Recently, John has been assisting several clients in assessing the contractual and commercial law implications of proposals for new digital services taxes in various jurisdictions.

Acted for Equinix Inc. on its USD 1 billion initial joint venture with GIC to develop and operate hyperscale data centres in Europe.

Acted for GlaxoSmithKline plc on the sale of its manufacturing site in Cork, Ireland, to Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc.
