Biography

Lorren Martin is a counsel in the Employment & Compensation department in the London office of Baker McKenzie. After training at the Firm, she qualified into the team in 2010 and now advises on all areas of UK employment law, as well as on international deals and multi-jurisdictional projects. She is a leading member of the team's financial services group, having completed secondments to a number of leading banks and financial institutions throughout her career. She is a member of the Firm's Baker Women affinity group as well as a trainee supervisor and associate coach.

Practice Focus

Lorren advises UK and global clients across various industry sectors on a full range of both contentious and non-contentious employment issues. She is experienced in advising on high profile discrimination, whistleblowing and equal pay claims; senior level management issues including contract / bonus arrangements and exits, and global transactions and restructuring projects.

Lorren has significant experience advising financial institutions on employment issues with a regulatory focus and is a trusted advisor on all aspects of investigations, including dealing with complex privilege issues. Lorren also has a keen interest in industrial and employee relations matters and has advised a range of companies on the management of significant industrial disputes. Lorren is known for her approachable nature and practical, solutions based advice.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Acted for Emerson Electric Co on the international employment aspects of its sale of its Climate Technologies business for USD 14 billion to Blackstone, including the carve out of the workforce which comprised over 20,000 employees across 44 jurisdictions.
  • Acted for a global financial institution on an investigation into allegations of bullying and harassment against executive level employees, including reports to regulators.
  • Acted for several clients including a market leading social media company and an online payment platform on the completion of equal pay audits, pay equity reviews and issues in relation to the EU Pay Transparency Directive.
  • Acted for several US headquartered regulated companies on local obligations across the EU following the implementation of the EU Whistleblowing Directive and solutions to achieve compliance with both local and US requirements.
  • Advised a FTSE 100 client on a contentious large scale redundancy exercise across 12 jurisdictions including advising on the collective consultation process and numerous individual grievances and whistleblowing complaints.
  • Acted for a leading European bank on several high profile discrimination and equal pay claims brought by individuals implicated in regulatory investigations, including managing all aspects of the Tribunal litigation as well as advising on negotiations with US, European and UK regulators.
  • Acted for a global investment bank on a high court breach of contract claim worth in excess of GBP 15 million in relation to forfeited bonus payments.
  • Acted for several clients on multi-jurisdictional outsourcing projects, including TUPE issues and transfer mechanisms in non-automatic transfer locations.
  • Acted for a US headquartered client expanding into the UK market, including all employment aspects of the UK set up and contracts for those to be engaged.
  • Advised several clients on the renegotiation of collective agreements with unions.
