Biography

Hugo Jay is a senior associate in Baker McKenzie's Real Estate Practice Group in London. He qualified as a solicitor in 2013 and joined Baker McKenzie from another global law firm in 2022.

Practice Focus

Hugo's practice focuses on real estate investment and development, advising on acquisitions, financing, planning, development, structuring, leasing and disposals, often by way of complex joint venture, corporate wrapper, forward funding and forward sale arrangements.

Hugo also has considerable experience advising banks and borrowers on financing real estate investment and development and assisting investors and corporate occupiers with leasing matters.

Investment & Development

  • Advising Frasers Logistics & Commercial Trust (a Singapore REIT) on the acquisition of Blythe Valley Park (a 1.2 million sq ft mixed use business park) for GBP 170 million.
  • Advising Frasers Property Limited on the acquisition of Bedfont Lakes (a 271,725 sq ft premium business park) by way of share purchase for GBP 135 million.
  • Advising Frasers Logistics & Commercial Trust on the forward funded development and pre-let to Peugeot Motor Company Plc of Ellesmere Port (a 668,000 sq ft state-of-the-art logistics facility) for GBP 101 million.
  • Advising a US private equity firm on the forward funded redevelopment and pre-let of a central London office block by way of a corporate joint venture for GBP 240 million.
  • Advising an international hotel group on the acquisition by way of share purchase and extensive fit out of a central London hotel for circa GBP 190 million. 
  • Advising a Japanese property developer on its first UK development project, building 259 new apartments in central London, by way of a corporate joint venture with an estimated end value of GBP 250 million.
  • Advising London Legacy Development Corporation on the development of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park's East Bank, with pre-lets to the BBC, Sadler's Wells, London College of Fashion and the V&A, at an estimated cost of GBP 1.1 billion.
  • Advising a UK house builder on the implementation of a multi-phased public-private partnership regeneration project, delivering over 5,500 new homes in London over a 20-year period at an estimated cost of GBP 1 billion.

Finance

  • Advising a Malaysian retail bank on the provision of finance for the redevelopment of a 428,000 sq ft central London office space by way of a GBP 210 million facility.
  • Advising a Malaysian retail bank on securing a GBP 135 million facility over a portfolio of UK commercial properties.

Leasing

  • Advising a Singapore-based technology company on taking a lease of and carrying out extensive fit-out works to its flagship UK offices for circa GBP 65 million.
