Biography

Junya Ae is a member of the Antitrust / Competition and Corporate / M&A practice groups. He was part of the Competition Law Practice Group at Baker McKenzie's London office from October 2011 to March 2012. Before joining the Firm, he worked at the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications from 1995 to 2001. Junya has co-authored a number of publications related to his field and was named a leading practitioner in Who's Who Legal: Japan (Competition) from 2018 to 2022.

Practice Focus

Junya focuses on regulatory issues, especially in the areas of antitrust and competition law. He assists Japanese and international clients in international and domestic cartel investigations, multijurisdictional M&A transaction-related merger control matters and compliance investigations. He also provides support during on-site investigations conducted by government bodies and advises clients on distribution-related contractual and compliance issues.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Represented Japanese and foreign companies in international and domestic cartel investigations across a wide range of industries, including chemical products, construction materials, electric wires, bid rigging in government procurement, automotive products and services and electronics products, and in related civil litigation (eg, class action lawsuits in the US and Canada and follow-on damage claims in Europe). Recent cases in which Junya has been involved include the following:

    • Represented and advised a number of Japanese automotive component manufacturers in relation to cartel investigations and follow-on damage claims (Japan, US, EU, China, Brazil, Canada, etc.).
    • Represented and advised a Japanese electronic component manufacturer in relation to cartel investigations and follow-on damage claims (Japan, US, EU, China, Taiwan, Singapore, etc.).

  • Represented numerous Japanese and foreign companies in multijurisdictional merger control matters, including complex cases involving remedies. Recent cases in which Junya has been involved include the following:

    • Represented and advised a leading Japanese trust bank in relation to its acquisition of Australian asset management companies.
    • Represented and advised a leading Japanese financial institution in relation to its acquisition of a commercial bank in Indonesia.
    • Represented and advised a Japanese life insurance company in relation to its acquisition of a life insurance company in the US.
    • Represented and advised a Japanese leasing company in relation to its acquisition of the Japan finance business of a multinational conglomerate.
    • Represented and advised a Japanese trading company in relation to its overseas acquisitions and in the establishment of joint ventures overseas.
    • Represented and advised a Japanese electronic components manufacturer in relation to its acquisition of both domestic and overseas competitors.
