Baker McKenzie Cairo has acted as legal counsel to AMEA Power in connection with the development and financing of Africa’s largest single-site solar and batter energy storage project, a transformative 1,000 MW solar PV and 600 MWh battery facility in Egypt’s Aswan Governorate.

The USD 700 million project, jointly owned by AMEA Power and Kyuden International Corporation, represents a new benchmark for utility-scale renewable energy and energy storage on the continent. The project is expected to reach commercial operation in June 2026 and once operational, the project will deliver over 3 million MWh of clean electricity annually, powering more than 500,000 Egyptian households and offsetting 1.6 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.

Our team advised AMEA Power on all aspects of the project, including working with key stakeholders such as the Egyptian government on regulatory matters and supporting the client through the early construction mobilization phase. Our role encompassed drafting and negotiating the suite of project and finance documents, advising on land and permitting matters, and supporting AMEA Power in achieving financial close with a consortium of international lenders led by the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

Our team included Mohamed Elharmy (Partner, Projects and Finance), Ghada El Ehwany (Partner, Corporate/Commercial), Hani Nassef (Partner, M&A), Mohamed Elfar (Counsel, Anti-trust), Mohamed Abdelhalim (Counsel, Capital Market), Bassem Abdelrahman (Counsel, M&A) Ingy Elkady (Senior Associate, M&A), Marah Hashem (Associate, Corporate/Commercial), and Mohamed Aon (Junior Associate, Corporate/Commercial), Hania Elshazly (Junior Associate, Projects and Finance).

Mohamed Elharmy, Partner at Baker McKenzie, commented:

“We are proud to have advised AMEA Power and Kyuden International on the development and financing of this landmark 1GW solar PV integrated with large-scale battery energy storage. This project represents a major step forward for Egypt’s clean energy transition, enhancing grid stability while delivering reliable, low-carbon power at scale. Building on the successful operation of the 500MW solar and 300MWh BESS Abydos 1 project, which we also advised on, this project further demonstrates the bankability of complex renewable and storage projects in Egypt. We value our strategic partnership with the sponsors and are pleased to continue supporting their long-term vision and investment in the Egyptian market.”

Baker McKenzie’s Cairo office has a longstanding track record advising on pioneering energy and infrastructure projects in Egypt and across the region, supporting clients in delivering sustainable growth and energy security.
