Australia: Victoria's New Framework for Sustainable Data Centre Development

In brief

The Victorian Government has released the Sustainable Data Centre Action Plan (the Action Plan) which established a coordinated framework for overseeing the planning, infrastructure and community impacts of large data centre developments in Victoria. Developers and operators of new data centres in Victoria will be expected to:

• Locate facilities away from sensitive use and residential areas and comply with planning requirements and traffic controls
• Meet their electricity demand through investing in new renewable generation and storage, while funding connection costs and network updates
• Use recycled or other non-potable water for water-intensive cooling, or agree to measures to offset interim drinking water usage
• Deliver local benefits through employment, training and community investment.
