Think Opportunity, Think Baker McKenzie

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Associate to join our growing Energy transactional team in Melbourne. This dynamic role offers you the opportunity to run market-leading transactions working with our national Energy practice, reporting directly to Partner, Sarah Birrell

Sarah heads up the Energy practice in Melbourne and works with clients in the renewables, oil and gas, mining, critical minerals and infrastructure sectors, delivering strategic solutions on M&A, joint ventures and other complex transactions. You’ll also collaborate closely with our Sydney-based Partners, including Raymond Lou (Head of our Australian Energy practice), Sean Duffy, and Lucas Tyszkiewicz – leaders in the energy space.

Our practice

Baker McKenzie's Transactional Practice Group is at the forefront of providing commercially astute advice to major Australian and global companies, fund managers, pension funds and sovereign wealth funds. Energy transition is one of the three key pillars for Baker McKenzie globally, and the Australian office has done some of the largest renewables M&A transactions in the last two years.

We’re renowned for our expertise in high-end mergers and acquisitions, and what truly sets us apart is our unmatched global reach. With offices across the world, we offer clients something no other Australian law firm can: a leading local practice seamlessly connected to a fully integrated global platform. This means you’ll work on cross-border deals that make front-page news, alongside some of the most respected legal minds in the industry.

Our team specialises in complex M&A transactions, privatisations, listed public to private transactions, PPPs, structured finance, major infrastructure (including digital and telco infrastructure), energy, resources and utilities. This role offers you the opportunity to work on high profile projects with our industry-leading Australian and international clients – who are driving energy transition through investments in, and the development and operation of, energy and critical minerals projects.

About you

You will have:

  • demonstrable experience as a Senior Associate across a range of matters in the energy sector (regulatory experience and experience in oil and gas matters preferred but not essential);
  • relevant experience in a top tier or leading international law firm (preferred);
  • a strong client service focus;
  • a commitment to high standards including strong drafting and commercial skills, and excellent analytical, written and oral communication;
  • an ability to develop strong relationships with clients and take responsibility for these relationships, together with business development aptitude, interest, and experience;
  • an ability to work well in a team environment (including across Australian offices and internationally);
  • a proven ability to delegate and willingness to develop others through mentoring and sharing experiences.
