Biography

Jan Szczurek is an advocate (adwokat) admitted to practice in Poland and a senior associate in the Banking and Finance Practice at Baker McKenzie in Warsaw.

He graduated from the Faculty of Law and Administration of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków and studied law at University of Paris X (Nanterre) in France. Prior to joining the Firm in 2016, Jan gained experience in renown law firms in Kraków and Paris as well as in the Polish Financial Supervision Authority (KNF). In 2020, Jan was nominated by the Firm and further successfully recruited to the AmCham 30 under 30 program - a one-year mentoring and leadership development program organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Poland, which is focused on promoting the "top, brightest, most talented and promising young professionals" in the country.

Jan is a recommended lawyer in the Legal 500 ranking for Banking and Finance.

Practice Focus

Jan is a business lawyer with extensive experience in a wide range of banking and debt capital market transactions. He regularly advises clients on both transactional and regulatory matters, with a particular focus on real estate and corporate financing. He has worked with leading banks, investment funds, and borrowers on numerous complex, high-profile financing and refinancing projects, both domestic and cross border. Jan is also experienced in advising issuers and bondholders on matters concerning bond issuances.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Advised a consortium of banks on the EUR 185 million and PLN 70 million financing of the development of The Bridge, a landmark office complex in central Warsaw, by the Ghelamco Group.
  • Advised a consortium of banks on the financing of the Lakeside office complex development in Warsaw.
  • Advised entities from the Matexi Group on obtaining multiple financings through revolving credit facilities and the issuance of several series of secured bonds involving both Polish and Belgian jurisdictions.
  • Advised a consortium of banks on various aspects of multibillion-euro financings provided to Ghelamco Group companies for the Warsaw HUB and the Warsaw Unit projects.
  • Advised a real estate fund on several refinancing and financing transactions for warehouse projects in Poland with a total value exceeding EUR 250 million.
  • Advised Diagnostyka S.A. on obtaining a secured revolving credit facility totalling PLN 550 million from a consortium of Polish banks.
  • Advised PGNiG S.A. on the establishment of a PLN 5 billion bond programme.
