Biography

Javier Ordoñez Namihira has more than 17 years of experience in the practice of tax law with a strong international focus and has recently (2021) been ranked in "Band 2" by Chambers & Partners in the area of Private Wealth Law in Mexico. He joined Baker McKenzie, Mexico City in 2004 and he was assigned to practice from the Baker McKenzie Miami office (2018 - 2019). He is a frequent speaker at national and international seminars.

Practice Focus

Javier focuses on the legal aspects of international tax consulting from a corporate Income Tax and VAT perspective. He is proficient in legal interpretation and application of tax treaties, in the analysis, design and implementation of corporate restructurings, in the advice on taxation of the digital economy, and in the formation of investment funds in a tax efficient manner. He regularly advises high-net-worth individuals on a wide range of international tax planning matters from a wealth management perspective.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Advised one of the US' largest providers of secured non-recourse loans in the purchase of a Mexican group of companies engaged in the pawnshop industry.

  • Designed legal and tax guidelines for personnel in the insurance and private banking industry to cope with PE issues, personal taxation, and avoid risks of aiding & abetting prospective clients in tax fraud and related offenses.

  • Developed and implemented a tax efficient strategy for a foreign company in the entertainment industry aimed at obtaining preferential tax treatment on income from public shows in Mexico.

  • Advised a client in the flavor & fragrance industry as to the feasibility of reorganizing its business operations and achieve streamlined tax results.

  • Represented non-profit educational, animal protection and religious organizations in obtaining authorization from the Mexican treasury to receive donations that may be deducted for income tax purposes, and advised on maintaining their tax compliance status.
