Biography

Diego is a member of the Tax Practice Group in Mexico City, focusing his practice on both tax planning and tax controversy/litigation. He joined Baker McKenzie in 2021 as a law clerk and was promoted to junior associate in July 2023, having more than 2 years of experience in this area.

He received his law degree in May 2022, obtaining the CENEVAL Excellence Performance Award - EGEL.

Practice Focus

Diego develops his practice mainly in tax planning and consulting, federal and state (local) tax controversy and litigation, Ultimate Beneficial Owner (UBO) compliance, wealth management and customs. The clients he works with vary from manufacturing and real estate companies, to companies in the food industry and the energy sector (both national and international). Diego participates in the advising and defense of these clients with the main goal of protecting them as taxpayers and applying the tax laws in their best interest.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Collaborated in advising multinational companies with corporate restructuring schemes from a tax perspective.
  • Participated in tax consulting regarding intercompany transactions, interpretation and application of international tax treaties, implementation of tax strategies.
  • Assisted in the planning and development of the appropriate mechanisms for legal entities to comply with their Beneficial Owner (UBO) obligations. 
  • Supported clients throughout tax audit procedures before the Tax Authority, as well as in the challenging of tax assessments.
  • Assisted in the preparation and execution of legal defense for clients in Federal and Local tax litigations, including administrative appeals, nullity claims and amparos.
  • Participated in Conclusive Agreement procedures before the Mexican Tax Ombudsman, in order to reach a dialogue and possible conciliation between the taxpayer and the tax authority.
  • Assisted companies in the energy sector with the compliance of their obligations regarding volumetric controls.
  • Assisted companies in multiple administrative procedures and filings before the Mexican Tax Authority.
