Biography

Mark Delaney is a principal tax advisor in Baker McKenzie's global tax practice group, based in the London office, and is chair of the Firm's tax practice in the EMEA region. Mark has 28 years of experience, 20 years with Baker McKenzie, of advising and supporting a broad range of multinational clients extensively on international VAT and tax, focussing on international structuring and reorganisations, complex international tax advisory projects and supporting on high value tax audits and tax litigation in many jurisdictions globally.

Mark is a member of Chartered Institute of Taxation, admitted in 2001, winning the Victor Durckaz medal for first prize in the indirect taxation paper. He previously worked as a policy and parliamentary assistant in the US House of Representatives and UK Parliament.

Practice Focus

Mark leads the Firm's tax relationship with several very large multinationals, advising day to day primarily on VAT, indirect tax and digital taxes, but also overseeing the provision of tax legal support to these clients across tax. He has particular experience in the e-commerce and digital sectors, including the rapidly developing fintech and crypto asset sectors, and has supported his clients on a number of very high value tax investigations and litigation mandates in the UK and globally.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Leading the tax relationship with a number of the world’s leading e-commerce and technology businesses on: the structuring of their global operations, overseeing the global complex multijurisdictional tax advice, managing a wide range of tax controversies/audits and enquiries across the globe and dealing with business change and restructurings.
  • Managing and leading material tax litigation mandates in the UK and globally, involving some of the most high profile tax cases, including very high value settlements.
  • advising / supporting a range of major operators in fintech, crypto assets, and more traditional insurance and finance in global business structuring, audits and complex cross border tax advisory.
  • Supporting clients on policy outreach on tax proposals and developments at UK, EU and OECD level.
