Baker McKenzie is advising Genki Global Dining Concepts Corporation (GGDC) (TSE stock code: 9828) on its acquisition of Food Odyssey Pty. Ltd., operator of Australian sushi chain Sushi Sushi.
This acquisition represents a key step in GGDC’s international growth strategy. Through Sushi Sushi, the company will secure a strong market position, with approximately 180 restaurants operating across Australia. Sushi Sushi has also recently expanded into New Zealand and Saudi Arabia. The brand has achieved stable growth by securing locations in high traffic areas such as shopping centers, tailoring product offerings to local consumer preferences, maintaining a strong commitment to high quality ingredients and implementing efficient store operations.
The international Baker McKenzie team advising GGDC is led by Byron Frost, partner (Foreign Registered Lawyer) in the Tokyo office’s Corporate/M&A Group, with support from Richard Lustig (partner, Melbourne) and Tetsuo Tsujimoto (partner, Tokyo). They are being supported by Jed Lehmann (associate, Melbourne), Addison Naylor (associate, Melbourne), and Yuki Todaka (associate, Tokyo).
“We are honored to be supporting Genki on this landmark acquisition,” Byron commented. “Sushi is one of Japan’s most widely recognized cultural symbols, and contributing to a transaction that further connects this cultural heritage with my home country of Australia carries particular significance. Sushi Sushi has built a highly respected brand in Australia, with strong potential for future growth. Leveraging Baker McKenzie’s unparalleled global network and deep local insight, we look forward to further strengthening ties between our two countries through this and future engagements.”
