Former senior government trial lawyer and official joins Firm’s market-leading antitrust practice amid rapid expansion in the US and globally

Leading global law firm Baker McKenzie announced today that Tim Finley has joined the Firm as a Partner in its Antitrust & Competition Practice in Washington, DC. Tim is the most recent addition to the Firm’s rapidly growing antitrust group in the US, which has grown its headcount by five-fold in the last five years.

Tim is an 18-year veteran of the US Department of Justice, where he worked at both the Antitrust Division and Consumer Protection Branch. He has served in management as an Assistant Director, and he has acted as lead counsel in many trials and investigations as a Senior Trial Attorney. Before becoming a federal prosecutor, Tim was a litigation partner at a major law firm, where he specialized in litigating and trying complex cases on behalf of industry-leading companies. A seasoned and trusted first-chair trial lawyer with nearly 30 years of experience in government and in private practice, Tim focuses on cutting edge antitrust and consumer protection litigation, having led dozens of high-stakes trials and investigations involving multinational companies and senior corporate executives.

In his three decades of practice, Tim has tried both civil and criminal cases. His substantive experience covers the gamut of antitrust and consumer protection law, including the Sherman Act, unfair trade practices, mass consumer fraud, unapproved drugs and medical devices, the safety of consumer products, and data privacy. Tim has also successfully managed multi-agency investigations involving the FTC, FDA, HHS, FBI, DEA, and international authorities.

"I am thrilled that my former close Antitrust Division colleague Tim Finley has joined our leading Antitrust & Competition Practice," said Creighton Macy, Global Chair of Baker McKenzie’s Antitrust & Competition Practice. “Tim is a highly accomplished former federal prosecutor with unmatched experience in trying and investigating antitrust and consumer protection cases. With his strong reputation and track record in the courtroom, Tim will be a highly trusted advisor – one who can provide strategic, trial-ready counsel at the ready – for our clients.”

Baker McKenzie's Antitrust & Competition Practice is one of the largest in the world with more than 300 practitioners across 60 offices and 43 countries. Consistently recognized as a global leader, the group handles a comprehensive spectrum of complex competition law matters, including antitrust litigation, antitrust agency investigations, criminal and civil enforcement cases, and merger clearance matters. The team also regularly provides antitrust counseling as well as compliance guidance and training for clients. The US team in particular has expanded in response to strong client demand, and is a go-to practice advising clients on their most pressing antitrust and consumer protection matters.

"Tim brings an impeccable reputation and credibility that will be invaluable to our clients, particularly in this heightened enforcement environment,” said Maurice Bellan, Baker McKenzie’s Washington, DC Office Managing Partner. “He joins our growing team of former senior government officials in Washington who are providing highly valuable insights to clients navigating parallel regulatory and litigation risks.”

Added Colin Murray, Baker McKenzie’s North America Chief Executive, “Tim will provide invaluable advice to clients so they can carefully manage risk, seize opportunities and thrive, even in a turbulent business environment. Our antitrust team is unmatched in its ability to pair deep market knowledge with a global perspective, working across borders to deliver superior service and advice."

Tim joins Baker McKenzie during a period of rapid growth for the Firm’s Antitrust & Competition Practice in the US and globally. Earlier this year the Firm added Marie Leppard in London, in addition to five associates and counsel to its US team. The Firm’s Washington DC office continues to add leading practitioners with senior government experience, including former US Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and former US Treasury official Scott Levine. Creighton Macy was elevated to the Antitrust & Competition Practice’s Global Chair in March of this year after serving as the Practice’s North America Chair the past five years.

Tim commented, “I was initially drawn to Baker McKenzie because of the well-known growth and dynamism of the Firm’s Antitrust & Competition Practice. As I got to know the team further, I found a great cultural fit as well as a place where I will have an opportunity to work on some of today’s highest profile antitrust and litigation matters."

Tim earned his BA cum laude from the University of Arizona and his JD from Northwestern University School of Law. While at the DOJ, he was the recipient of both the Attorney General’s John Marshall Award for Litigation and the Attorney General’s Award for Fraud Prevention.
