Biography

James is a transactional energy lawyer and partner in our London Energy & Infrastructure team. He advises across the full lifecycle of energy and infrastructure assets, with a particular focus on early-stage development, project structuring and project finance in the context of the global energy transition. His clients include climate-focused investment funds, energy traders, developers, sovereign wealth funds and multinational corporates.

James has extensive experience across a broad range of technologies including BESS, green hydrogen and ammonia, nuclear, solar, wind, hydropower and decarbonised fuels. His practice spans both greenfield and brownfield, combining deep technical project finance capability with commercial expertise in joint ventures, M&A, development agreements, structured finance and public-private partnerships.

James’s work is international in scope, with a particular emphasis on Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Practice Focus

  • Advised on a wide variety of physical, sleeved and virtual power purchase agreements for a range of corporates.
  • Advised an energy-focused private equity fund in relation to the funding, commercial and other project development arrangements relating to a new CCGT power plant incorporating novel technology and associated CCS infrastructure.
  • Advised a hedge fund-backed aggregator in relation to the acquisition of a portfolio of renewable generation assets with co-located BESS and the associated establishment of an optimiser business.
  • Advised a French developer in relation to the UK's LCHA, to underpin the development and finance of a blue hydrogen project in the UK, incorporating CCS.
  • Advised on the development and finance of a USD 1.3 billion hydropower and green ammonia project in Peru.
  • Advised on the structuring and financing of a USD 100 million biogas plant using novel waste-to-energy technology.
  • Advised the UK Government on its roles in the development and financing of Hinkley Point C and the Wylfa Newydd nuclear project.
  • Advised the Department for Transport on the financial restructuring of the GBP 18.8 billion Crossrail project.
