Biography

Caroline Serbanescu is an associate in the IP & Tech Practice Group in the Brussels office. She joined Baker McKenzie in March 2022. Prior to that, she worked as a Blue Book trainee at the European Commission and as a trainee at the Belgian Data Protection Authority as well as at several international business law firms. In 2025, Caroline completed a secondment in the Data Protection team of a leading global technology company in the payment industry. Caroline is regularly mentioned as a “key lawyer” in her fields of expertise in Legal500 publications.

Practice Focus

Caroline advises clients on various aspects in the field of Tech Law. Her practice focuses on assisting clients on complex legal questions in the areas of data law, data protection law, whistleblowing law, e-commerce law, marketing law, private investigations law, consumer law as well as cybersecurity law. 

Secondment

In 2025, Caroline was seconded on a full-time basis in the Data Protection team of a leading global technology industry in the payment industry. As part of her secondment, Caroline reviewed and negotiated data protection terms in contracts and advised on data protection risks and mitigation measures related to the development of new products (incl. DPIAs/PIAs).

  • Assisting and providing strategic advice to an international client in the elaboration of BCR policies and of a strategy for BCR approval for international transfers of personal data
  • Advised multiple leading international companies, including an online social media and networking service group, on direct and targeted marketing requirements
  • Assisted a leading pharmaceutical company with in-depth advice and analysis on the collection and processing of health-related data
  • Advised a multinational company group on data protection aspects in antitrust investigations
  • Assisted several international clients on the collection and processing of personal data in the context of the operation of a whistleblowing hotline
  • Advised an international client active in the renewable energy industry on applicable cybersecurity requirements
  • Advised an international client in the pharmaceutical industry on complex legal questions relating to data ownership
  • Assisted an international client in navigating the complex EU and Belgian regulatory framework for the AdTech industry
  • Assisted an international client on the setting up of an employee geolocation tool in compliance with data protection law
  • Advised several international e-commerce clients on compliance with the DSA requirements
