Biography

Prior to joining Baker McKenzie in October 2023, Emily spent over 17 years at Herbert Smith Freehills in the Melbourne commercial real estate team.

Emily has extensive experience advising a broad range of corporate and government clients on market-leading real estate transactions. She is widely regarded as a safe pair of hands, guiding clients through complex transactions, as well as providing commercially focused and pragmatic advice on 'business as usual' real estate matters.

Practice Focus

Emily’s primary focus is on commercial property matters including the acquisition and disposal of commercial, industrial and retail properties, the negotiation of contracts of sale and advising on property development projects. She has significant experience with commercial leasing, including drafting and negotiating complex agreements for lease for purpose-built facilities.

Emily also advises on land assembly for major infrastructure projects and renewable energy projects, including drafting and negotiation of project documentation and advising on land assembly strategy and value capture opportunities.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Acting for Coles on its project to establish new autonomous fulfilment distribution centres for the Coles Online business and ‘spoke’ sites to support the distribution network, including negotiation of complex agreements for lease and leases.
  • Advising the vendor on the sale of Craigieburn Central Shopping Centre for $300 million dollars, including advising on co-ownership issues and legacy issues concerning the initial development of Craigieburn Town Centre.
  • Acting for CSL Seqirus on the development of an $800 million cell-based vaccine manufacturing facility at Melbourne Airport Business Park.
  • Advising Toll Group on the leasing of its portfolio of industrial and commercial premises throughout Australia, with a primary focus on complex agreements for lease and leases of strategic sites.
  • Acting for Rail Projects Victoria and the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning on all aspects of land assembly and land access required for the Metro Tunnel project, including developing land acquisition strategies for complex sites, compulsory and voluntary acquisitions of private and public land, and advising on oversite development opportunities
  • Advising Coles on the acquisition of developed commercial land in Balaclava for redevelopment purposes and the sale and redevelopment of Richmond Quarter as a mixed-use development comprising retail, commercial office and build-to-rent components.
  • Advising Vicinity Centres on the acquisition and disposal of various shopping centre assets throughout Australia, including negotiation of joint ownership arrangements.
  • Acting for Bain Capital on the real estate aspects of its acquisition of Virgin Australia out of administration, and subsequently advising Virgin Australia on the negotiation of its head office lease in Brisbane and the renegotiation of airport leases with all major airports throughout Australia.
  • Advising TasNetworks on the proposed Marinus Link undersea electricity interconnector between Victoria and Tasmania, including the acquisition of strategic sites and the development of land acquisition strategies and easement documentation.
  • Acting for SAS Trustee Corporation and NSW Treasury Corporation regarding the restructure of 7 high value commercial, industrial and retail assets throughout Victoria and NSW.
