Biography

Malik Mikel is an associate in Baker McKenzie’s Intellectual Property and Technology team based in London. He advises multinational clients on complex, cross-border intellectual property, commercial and regulatory matters across the technology and life sciences sectors, including pharmaceuticals and other regulated health products.

Malik trained at Baker McKenzie and was seconded to the Firm’s Dubai office, where he worked on high-value disputes before the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) Courts.

He regularly advises on sophisticated commercial arrangements, including outsourcing, distribution and licensing agreements, as well as complex technology and services contracts. Alongside his transactional work, Malik has strong experience in contentious matters, supporting clients on high-value disputes across multiple jurisdictions.

Practice Focus

Malik’s IP practice spans the full lifecycle of intellectual property rights, including patents, trademarks, copyright and trade secrets.

He advises clients on a broad range of both contentious and non‑contentious intellectual property matters.

He works on complex, multi‑jurisdictional disputes, as well as on the commercialisation of intellectual property through licensing, technology transfer and strategic partnerships.

Malik regularly advises on outsourcing, distribution and licensing arrangements, and on wider commercial and technology contracts. He also advises on consumer regulatory matters, including advertising, marketing and product compliance, with particular experience supporting clients operating in the technology, fintech, life sciences and consumer goods sectors.

  • Advised a multinational consumer beverages group in investor-state arbitration proceedings against a foreign state arising out of a state-related divestment.
  • Advised a global pharmaceutical company on a complex patent dispute relating to royalty rates for the development and commercialisation of oncology treatments.
  • Advised a Middle Eastern government authority on EU trade mark opposition proceedings involving the protection and enforcement of a globally recognised place-name brand.
  • Advised a global consumer products company on the settlement of a UK trade mark dispute concerning branding for a next-generation nicotine product.

Transactional

  • Advised a global brewing and consumer beverages group on the IP aspects of the divestment of a regional business to a third‑party buyer, including the separation and transfer of trade marks and related IP rights.
  • Advised a global private equity firm on its proposed acquisition of a controlling interest in the consumer healthcare business of a multinational pharmaceutical group.
  • Advised a US‑headquartered technology group on IP structuring in connection with the acquisition of a UK artificial intelligence security and safety software company.

  • Advised a multinational technology company on consumer law and advertising compliance in connection with the rollout of new digital advertising formats across the EU and other international markets.
  • Advised a global fashion and luxury retail brand on EU consumer protection, pricing and discounting rules in connection with the operation and expansion of its outlet and online sales channels.

Malik is active in pro bono work and has advised a range of NGOs and international organisations, including WWF, Save the Children International, the Centre for Homelessness Impact and Amicus, including on death‑row appeals.
