Biography

Thomas joined Baker McKenzie as a Senior Trade Advisor in the Tax Practice Group in April 2022. He has 10+ years of experience in the field of Customs, International Trade and Implementation of Duty Optimization Programs. Thomas is a guest lecturer at the University of Antwerp (UAntwerp) and holds a US Customs Broker License.

Practice Focus

Thomas advises clients on a variety of trade related topics such as duty optimization programs, custom transformation initiatives, custom essentials, customs processes optimization and customs compliance.

He has extensive knowledge and experience in the interplay between Customs Value and Transfer Pricing by supporting clients in joining the Reconciliation program offered by US Customs and successfully reporting their TP adjustments. Thomas also acquired some knowledge in the field of trade management systems, compliance and risk technology solutions (e.g. SAP GTS, Oracle GTM.).

Representative Legal Matters

  • Project Manager on large tax aligned supply-chain optimisation projects (including: Global Trade compliance software implementation for pan-European activities).

  • Project Manager on Global Classification projects for Heavy Machinery Industries (200K parts).

  • Assisted companies in the chemical and automotive industry implement TP adjustments reporting processes in the US.

  • Project Lead which supported the implementation of a global FTA program by drafting operational processes. Subject Matter Expert responsible for the training of the client’s trade team and suppliers.

  • Engagement manager in charge of Global Trade Compliance and Customs HUB analysis to determine the most favourable countries for implementing GDC's (Global Distribution Center) & RDC's (Regional Distribution Center).

  • Project Lead, along with client's Global Head of Trade and Supply Chain, designated to support the e-commerce expansion of the company’s presence in over 80 countries.

  • Project Manager for a Brexit Day readiness project for a large retailer. During this assignment, Thomas was requested to lead a team of 14, performed tasks such as master data review, Broker onboarding, drafting customs procedures/processes and supporting the SAP GTS implementation support (blueprint).

  • Assisted global companies in setting-up best practice import and export strategies to minimize duty liability while complying with Customs legislation.

  • Project manager on a series of M&A Day 1 readiness projects, responsible for coordinating support Customs support from all countries in scope.

  • Assisted large importers in successfully completing Customs and Border Protection's Focused Assessment (FA) reviews.
