Biography

Zeyang Gao is an associate in Baker McKenzie's Competition, Trade and Foreign Investment Department in London. Zeyang trained at Baker McKenzie and qualified in September 2020. Zeyang has also worked on secondment in the EU Competition & Regulatory Affairs practice of Baker McKenzie's Brussels office.

Practice Focus

Zeyang advises on all aspects of competition law including merger control, foreign investment and national security reviews, competition investigations, state aid, information exchange, abuse of dominance and general competition compliance. Zeyang is experienced in advising on high value and complex multi-jurisdictional transactions, and advises and represents clients in the tech, telecoms and healthcare industries. He has also represented clients on a broad range of matters before the UK Competition and Markets Authority, the European Commission, and the UK Investment Security Unit.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Advising a multinational telecommunications company on its global regulatory clearances (including merger control and foreign investment review) for its USD 1.8 billion acquisition of the EMEA business of another multinational telecommunications company.
  • Advised a major global technology business as a third party on the UK competition and national security reviews of Nvidia's proposed USD 40 billion acquisition of Arm.
  • Advised ICU Medical, Inc. on the global regulatory clearances (including merger control and foreign investment review) for its USD 2.35 billion acquisition of the Smiths Medical division from Smiths Group plc.
  • Advised a major European engineering company on securing clearance under the UK National Security and Investment Act for the EUR 1.6 billion divestment of a technology/transport infrastructure business to a Japanese conglomerate.
  • Regularly advising clients on foreign investment clearances relating to telecoms, critical technology, data infrastructure, communications and healthcare and life sciences. Advised on multiple transactions under the UK National Security and Investment Act that have involved an in-depth national security review during the first year of the Act's operation.
