Biography

Matthew is a senior associate in the Firm's Corporate Practice Group in London. He advises institutional investors, asset managers and fund sponsors on the full lifecycle of private funds, with particular experience in investor representation, fund formations, GP advisory and secondary transactions. He also represents venture capital investors and early-stage companies in financings, and regularly advises on cross border M&A transactions and joint ventures. His practice spans the UK, Europe, the Middle East and Asia, across a wide range of sectors, including technology and financial services. He has been recognised as a key lawyer in private funds by The Legal 500.

Prior to joining Baker McKenzie, Matthew was a member of the Corporate M&A team at a boutique Australian law firm.

Fund formation

  • Advised a large global financial institution on the formation of its private equity and secondaries funds.
  • Advised the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) on the formation of its African credit fund.
  • Advised an ADGM-based manager on the formation of two open-ended funds.
  • Advised a Middle East-based family office on the establishment of a fund in the Channel Islands.

  • Advised a sovereign wealth fund on its investment into Global Infrastructure Partners’ AIP Fund as part of its USD 30bn sponsor closing.
  • Advised a multinational investor on a significant co investment relating to the approximately GBP 2.2bn takeover of a UK listed company.
  • Advised a large multinational on the structuring and execution of the transfer of its secondaries portfolio.
  • Advised the private equity division of a global financial institution on its fund investments, separate managed accounts and joint ventures.
  • Advised a sovereign wealth fund on various fund investments.
  • Advised a US-based investment manager on a number of investments and co-investments.
  • Advised a large multinational on numerous private equity, real estate and venture capital investments and co-investments globally.
