Biography

Maria Barros Mota is an associate in the Dispute Resolution practice group in Dusseldorf.

Maria advices and represents clients on complex international arbitration matters. She has experience with arbitration proceedings under the Rules of major arbitral institutions, including the ICC, DIS, HKIAC, CAM-CCBC.

Within the firm, Maria has previously worked with Baker McKenzie’s teams in Rio de Janeiro (in cooperation with Trench Rossi Watanabe) and New York, contributing to cross-office collaboration and global client service. She is also the co-editor of Global Arbitration News, the Firm’s international arbitration blog.

Maria has advised and represented clients in a range of industries, including cross-border commercial contracts, oil & gas, post-M&A, construction, and pharmaceuticals.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Representing a US biotech company in a license dispute with its licensor (ICC arbitration seated in London; amount in dispute: over USD 400 million)
  • Representing a German global market leader of battery watering filling systems in a dispute with its longtime supplier involving complex requests (DIS arbitration seated in Munich; amount in dispute: over EUR 10 million)
  • Represented a German utilities company in dispute with its joint venture partner in China (HKIAC arbitration seated in Hong Kong)
  • Represented a Brazilian oil company in an arbitration involving over 40 claims and counterclaims arising out of an EPC contract for the construction of off-shore oil platforms (ICC arbitration seated in New York; amount in dispute: over USD 350 million)
  • Represented the Brazilian subsidiary of a French multinational company in a dispute involving a contract for the supply of gas (ICC arbitration seated in Rio de Janeiro; amount in dispute: over USD 25 million)
