Biography

Jodi Avila is a partner in the Dispute Resolution Group and serves as co-chair of the Articles Committee of the North America Trial Team. Drawing on her depth of experience and record of success, Jodi leads teams of attorneys and outside consultants in the development and implementation of strategies designed to achieve the most favorable outcomes for her clients.

A skilled courtroom advocate and trial attorney, Jodi represents multinational corporations and individuals in a wide range of commercial litigation, including business torts, antitrust, and civil RICO cases. Jodi also advises clients on internal investigations, regulatory investigations and compliance matters.

Jodi also has significant appellate experience and has represented clients in the United States Supreme Court and the United States Courts of Appeals for the Eleventh, Federal and D.C. Circuits. Earlier in her career, Jodi served as a judicial clerk for the Honorable Adalberto Jordan of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. 

Deeply engaged in the local bench and bar, Jodi is proud to serve as a member of the Southern District of Florida’s Magistrate Judge Merit Selection Panel, where she evaluates and recommends candidates to the federal judiciary.  She is also active in local professional associations and bar committees, reflecting her strong ties to the legal community.  In addition, Jodi maintains a longstanding commitment to pro bono service and community engagement, representing individuals and organizations in matters ranging from civil rights to access-to-justice initiatives. 

Practice Focus

Jodi's litigation practice centers on high-stakes disputes in federal and state courts nationwide. She regularly represents clients in complex commercial litigation, including contract disputes, civil RICO claims, fraud and misrepresentation, unlawful and unfair business practices, antitrust, and sophisticated employment contract matters. 

She has significant experience in internal investigations and white collar defense, advising corporations and individuals in cases involving bank fraud, wire fraud, healthcare fraud, and securities fraud.

Jodi is known for her client-centered approach to litigation. She brings a pragmatic, results-driven perspective to her litigation practice. Fully prepared for trial and appeal, she nonetheless emphasizes solutions that serve her clients’ broader business and financial goals. Her strength lies in balancing vigorous advocacy with practical strategies that resolve disputes efficiently and effectively. 

Representative Legal Matters

  • Representing the official liquidators of international life and health insurance company in federal civil RICO action involving allegations of wire fraud and embezzlement, pursuing recovery of misappropriated insurance funds through multi-jurisdictional litigation and asset enforcement strategies.

  • Defended the owner and operator of a South Florida mortgage bank in a criminal prosecution brought by the Department of Justice.

  • Represented an international diagnostic service provider in a patent infringement lawsuit.

  • Represented the world’s largest lessor of Boeing 767-200SF aircraft in a breach of contract and conversion lawsuit against foreign sub-lessor.

  • Represented a foreign entity in a lawsuit seeking to recover assets misappropriated through fraud.

  • Represented a broadband provider in a multi-million dollar breach of contract and fraud action brought against media delivery company.

  • Defended a limited liability company and its managing member in a derivative lawsuit, obtaining dismissal with prejudice in clients’ favor.

  • Represented a well-known television personality in a breach of contract lawsuit, obtaining dismissal with prejudice in client’s favor.

  • Represented a Miami real-estate developer in a multi-million dollar civil rights case against a South Florida municipality.
