A team of leading cybersecurity specialists from Baker McKenzie Taipei spoke at the "GDDA Smart Connected Future: Taiwan & Japan Smart Mobility × AI Healthcare Business Conference" on the latest global trends in cybersecurity. The conference, held on 12 June and hosted by the Global Digital Delivery Alliance (GDDA), brought together prominent Taiwanese and Japanese corporations to explore bilateral market opportunities in smart vehicle and AI healthcare technology-related services.

As global advances in artificial intelligence continue to accelerate innovation, they also give rise to increasingly complex cybersecurity risks. The Baker McKenzie team, led by Executive Partner Anna L.J. Hwang and including partners Robert Lee and Tony Tang, were invited by the GDDA to discuss the latest trends in cyber threats.

Partner Robert Lee cited a former FBI cybersecurity expert's report, which underscored the underground ecosystem of ransomware operations and highlighted a 50% surge in attacks linked to initial access brokers (IABs), particularly through exploiting system vulnerabilities to gain unauthorized access. He remarked that the recent significant advances of generative AI technologies may have amplified such risks.

Robert explained that IABs would advertise the sale of such unauthorized access channels on the dark web for as little as a few hundred US dollars, making attribution and mitigation particularly challenging. In response, governments worldwide have been intensifying cybersecurity regulations. For example, the European Union adopted the NIS2 Directive in 2022 to strengthen cybersecurity across critical sectors. However, only 12 out of 29 jurisdictions have transposed the directive into national law so far, with varying implementations that create compliance challenges for multinational businesses.

With its deep experience in cross-border dispute resolutions and multijurisdictional regulatory compliance, Baker McKenzie Taipei is well positioned to assist Taiwanese and Japanese companies in navigating these evolving legal landscapes as they expand internationally. The conference also featured speakers from the following organizations: ITRI's Service Systems Technology Center, CARPOST, Ai3 Co., NTT Group, NTT DATA, ASPIC, JAHIS and VetsBrain.
