Description

The Senior Analyst, Market Strategy & Analytics (EMEA) will assist the Market Strategy & Analytics team to conduct analysis (drawing on numerous large data sources) and develop deliverables required by Market Strategy & Analytics' internal clients. These deliverables will ultimately assist Partners and firm leadership to make relevant decisions relating to the implementation of the firm's strategy on a global, regional and local level. This role will have a stronger focus on the EMEA region on top of its inherent global responsibilities and will have regular exposure to firm management.
 
Responsibilities:
 
Project responsibilities: 

  • To support ongoing Strategy and Business Analytics projects globally and in the EMEA region
  • Assist in the assessment and review of our current business shape to help investigate which legal teams, markets, or industries we should prioritize and further invest in the near future
  • Help Partners understand which clients they should direct their efforts to and what level of returns may be expected by doing so
  • Assist Partners in specific client initiatives to help bring new customers and mandates to the Firm
  • Assist in the creation of new operational process improvements, Management Information solutions, or data modelling/scoring systems across various practices and functions
  • Ad-hoc support on creating presentations, graphics and reports for various senior stakeholders while also being able to comment and present the final output to the customers
  • Research support to meet strategic targeting and business development requirements, leveraging external financial information databases, legal and macro-economic reports to help provide market context to the Firm and our clients
  • Collaborate on projects involving legal and non-legal technology providers to help the team develop cutting edge and innovative solutions (including sentiment analyses, machine learning, etc.)
  • Advocate the use of effective decision-making techniques and efficiency-enhancing behaviours including Business Analytics, Pricing, Legal Project Management and Legal AI in your various interventions
  • Contribute to the development of the Market Strategy & Analytics team by improving how we work and share knowledge

For context, the following recent Market Strategy & Analytics projects are typical of the work with which the Analyst will be expected to assist:

  • Supporting three EMEA countries with their annual strategy refresh in line with the firm's freshly released Client & Market Strategy - drawing on their changing macroeconomic environments, our competitive position in those markets, and the profit dynamics of their client bases
  • Developing and analyzing options for addressing parts of the firm which have a high reliance on less-profitable clients
  • Assessing the potential impacts of a proposed internal reorganization, including its impact on our competitive position and its relationship to macroeconomic activity
  • Developing and communicating a suite of tools that enable internal business users to self-serve information pertinent to their business planning cycle, target clients more efficiently, price and staff matters profitably, and track their performance

Technical responsibilities: 

  • Analyse historical and real-time data to create summaries supporting the decision making of senior leadership and Partners
  • Use statistical methods to identify meaningful relationships among seemingly unrelated and sometimes unstructured sets of data
  • Support the development of a foundational enterprise data analytics platform by studying business and information needs, conferring with users, studying system data flow, data usage patterns, and work processes; and investigating problem areas
  • Gather data from multiple sources and assimilate into meaningful inputs for Firm databases
  • Continually validate data sources and ensure data grouping and mapping is accurate and clean
  • Create ad-hoc solutions to business problems, including automating manual processes by using VBA, SQL, Tableau, Tableau Prep, Python, Power Pivots, and the full suite of MS Office applications
  • Skills and concepts which the Analyst will be expected to apply include: joins; blends; creating custom calculations; level-of-detail calculations; sequential filtering; understanding the software's order-of-operations; describing granularity of the view; creating tabular data; restructuring data into a form appropriate for the analysis; handling data with multiple periodicities; capturing clean data from primary research; describing the limits of data captured; optimizing calculation and size efficiency, and preparing workbooks in an efficient manner. The Analyst will be expected to demonstrate these skills in a Tableau or similar environment prior to the conclusion of their probation period. Existing familiarity with these concepts is a significant plus
     

Skills and Experience:
 

  • Relevant undergraduate (Math, Statistics, Computer Science, Chartered Accountancy or Business strongly preferred) degree with demonstration of consistently strong academic performance
  • Strong data manipulation skills
  • Prior experience in an analogous field such as Management Consulting, Data Analytics, Finance or Corporate Strategy preferred
  • Critical-thinking, commercial, strategic and analytical mind-set
  • Ability to distil complex information into commercially relevant findings and to draw insights from complex datasets
  • Critical thinker, who is able to challenge the robustness of the story drawn from data and to suggest means of gaining more appropriate insights
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Demonstrates initiative and manages work independently
  • Engages proactively with managers to seek input and resolve risks and issues
  • Ability to engage with a variety of teams with significant differences in their perspectives (e.g. Technology, Finance, Business Development and Client teams) to help the group achieve its objectives
  • Understanding of corporate transactions and the different market databases available (e.g. Bloomberg, Refinitiv, MergerMarket) preferred
  • Experience of financial systems (e.g. SAP), common business applications (Excel, Access, SQL, Tableau) and programming languages (Python, VBA) strongly preferred
  • First-rate written and oral communication skills in English and the primary business language of your location
  • Ability to withstand pressure during busy periods, while keeping high quality execution and respect of fast-moving, urgent deadlines
  • Shows a deep and current understanding of political, legal and economic news to provide context to the work outputs
