Role Purpose

To manage the strategic focus of the UK Dispute Resolution practice's in-market Business Development. To pursue a strategic-focused, market-leading BDMC business-partnering capability, which enables the practice to win, retain and grow business through consistently high standards, engaging thought leadership, strong relationship management and elevating our reputation. To work in partnership with the practice's leadership and other colleagues to execute the strategic deliverables. 

Main Responsibilities

  • To lead on the design and execution strategic, revenue-generating and profitable BD activities for the London DR practice, working side-by-side with practice leadership and bringing in BDMC Expert and End-to-End functions as required (these functions include central marketing, directories, proposals, key client management, data analytics, market research, events and design teams).
  • Pro-actively drive forward London DR priorities such as practice-driven strategic initiatives, client targeting; client events, client listening, thought-leadership, directory & award submissions, proposals and a range of other BDMC projects across the practice group as required.
  • Work with Partners and fee earners to ensure their BDMC requirements are strategically brainstormed, developed, implemented and communicated to other parts of the BDMC function; collaborate with Expert functions to challenge requests where commercially prudent, e.g. pitch go/no go decisions
  • To ensure the Firm captures the feedback, matter experience, client contacts and business development leads to enable the practice to promote itself effectively and to grow its business.
  • To work with colleagues in Practice Groups and Industry Groups to ensure lawyers are armed with information on latest trends and related hot topics/talking points and use them to generate opportunities, and to get DR a "seat at the table" to cross-sell our capabilities and bring the whole firm to our clients and prospects.
  • To regularly review a pipeline of targets to ensure that opportunities are prioritised and targeting efforts are focused on the greatest opportunities for developing business.
  • To work closely with the London BDMC team to support firm-wide, office and practice client targeting initiatives through proactive relationship management, client and industry research and opportunity spotting.  This will include supporting practice campaigns, developing internal and external messaging, roll-out and evaluation.
  • Leading and refining BD priorities for the DR practice, including but not limited to: our industry-focused strategy, our annual flagship events series, effective responses to requests for proposals and other work-winning techniques, profile raising objectives and marketing campaigns.
  • Maintaining and developing the practice's external profile via a selection of sponsorship, trade body/association membership, social media, seminars and conferences and in-house campaign initiatives.
  • Owning and facilitating processes, and driving engagement of processes and systems, that underpin the delivery of the firm and practice's BDMC objective, e.g. the use of CRM systems.
  • The DR PAs and Trainees play an integral role in the success of our BD strategy and operations. A mixture of formal and informal advice/training to these colleagues is needed in order to embed the 'BD ecosystem' and to provide a seamless service to internal clients.
  • Close collaboration with counterparts in other London practice groups and with DR BD colleagues in the region and globally in order to share successes and support the implementation of the global DR value proposition in order to elevate our market profile is key.

  • Enable us to win, retain and grow business through powerful pitches, engaging thought leadership and strong relationship management
  • Lead market & client intelligence efforts to create new service line opportunities in industry and practice groups
  • Channel the Baker McKenzie brand, identity and culture through a single communications voice

This role will report to the Director of Business Development, Marketing & Communications, London

The key relationships of this role are with the following:

  • DR Partners 
  • All other members of the DR department: associates, trainees, PAs and fellow Business Professionals
  • BDMC colleagues in the London team, DR BD counterparts across the globe, and specialist functions in our Service Centres

About The Candidate 

Technical skills, qualifications and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in lieu of a degree.
  • A qualification or other demonstrated commitment to your profession, e.g. CIM qualification, would be desirable.
  • Demonstrable experience in a marketing and/or business development role, preferably in a professional services environment.
  • Experience working with senior stakeholders and developing mutually beneficial relationships at all levels. 
  • A desire to achieve
  • An interest and curiosity in Dispute Resolution and issues impacting our clients and the legal market
  • The ability to influence others, of varying seniority, to embrace change, collaborate together and go above and beyond.
