We are looking for a Business Development Manager (Global Compliance & Investigations) to join our highly regarded team at Baker McKenzie, Belfast.

Main Responsibilities:

Strategic planning

  • Understand the Firm’s strategic plan and ensure that the Group’s business development objectives support the overall Firm strategic plan
  • Develop the BD and marketing components of the Global C&I Group annual business plan
  • Review and supervise regional BD and marketing plans to ensure alignment with the global plan, and vice versa

Industry sector targeting

  • Work with the C&I/Dispute Resolution sector groups to target specific industry sectors, raise profile in these sectors, and expand and deepen client relationships in these sectors
  • Develop and execute focused industry business development plans for each sector
  • Identify and pursue targeted profile-raising activities in the sectors, including training academies, seminars, conferences and publications

Client development

  • Proactively work to target and develop strategic client targets for the C&I Group, collaborating with the Global Client and Industry teams as needed.
  • Track client activities and develop client-specific business development action plans for each target client
  • Conduct appropriate client follow-up – including coordinating follow-up with partners within the Firm who have the principal relationships with the clients as well as the client service directors

Thought leadership

  • Actively develop and maintain a deep understanding of C&I issues and our Firm's competitive position within the market
  • Work with the lawyers and BD Manager, Global Dispute Resolution, on strategic thought leadership campaigns aimed at raising the Group's profile in the market
  • Work on specific products, tools and offerings to raise the Group's profile in the market

Marketing/communications

  • Lead the review and continuous improvement of the C&I Group's suite of marketing materials, including capability statements, pitch templates, matter lists, website content (internal and external), press releases, and social media
  • Conceive of innovative ways to engage internal and external clients with C&I-related products and services
  • Drive internal communications globally for the Global C&I Group, to assist in building a cohesive and well-informed practice
  • Maintain up-to-date reports on awards, achievements and rankings of the Group globally
  • Lead the preparation of submissions for relevant directories in cooperation with the appropriate global and regional teams

Coordination of the Group’s support network

  • Organize regular conference calls with regional and local BD/Marketing personnel with responsibility for supporting the Group
  • Work closely with the Global C&I Group's PSL on joint projects   
  • Maintain communications with the other teams within the BD department - client service team, pricing and legal project management team, media/comms, etc.

Experience Required

Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree desirable. Masters or other qualifications focusing on Marketing, Communications, Sales or related commercial subjects would be advantageous
  • Significant post-qualification business development and marketing experience with knowledge of the Practice area preferred
  • Experience working directly with senior counterparts on strategy and execution
  • Experience of working in a multi-cultural, cross-border team is preferred
  • Excellent time management and organizing skills; ability to prioritise and manage time to meet deadlines
  • Excellent English language skills (verbal and written) and the confidence to communicate in a multi-cultural, multi-level environment
  • Strong word processing and spreadsheet skills
  • Team spirit, collaboration, positivity and adaptability
  • High level of commercial acumen and business curiosity to identify growth opportunities for the business and keep abreast of business trends
  • Strong project management skills, with high level of attention to detail, ability to deliver complex cross-border projects on time
  • Experience in or willingness to learn document automation and other legal technology
  • Able to move through a variety of tasks requiring different approaches, knowledge, and expertise, with agility of mind and capacity for analysis and synthesis
