Description

The Senior Analyst, Market Strategy & Analytics (APAC) will lead discrete analyses (drawing on numerous large data sources) and develop deliverables required by Market Strategy & Analytics' (MSA) internal clients, with support from MSA leadership. These deliverables will ultimately assist Partners and firm leadership to make relevant decisions relating to the implementation of the firm's strategy on a global, regional, and local level. This role will have a stronger focus on the APAC region on top of its inherent global responsibilities and will have regular exposure to firm management.

  • Support ongoing Market Strategy and Analytics projects globally and in the APAC region
  • Support the perpetual assessment of our business shape and strategy, to help investigate where (e.g. which legal teams, markets, or industries) Baker McKenzie should prioritize and invest
  • Help Partners understand which areas (e.g. clients, legal practice areas, or business trends) they should direct their efforts to and what level of returns may be expected by doing so
  • Assist Partners in specific client initiatives to help bring new customers and mandates to the Firm
  • Assist in the design and implementation of operational process improvements, Management Information solutions, or data modelling/scoring systems across various practices and functions
  • Develop engaging reports and presentations that provide well-considered recommendations to senior decision-makers and guide their attention to the most salient information to evaluate those decisions, with support from MSA leadership
  • Present results of MSA analyses to Partner and business professional stakeholder groups
  • Ad-hoc support on creating presentations, graphics, and reports for various senior stakeholders while also being able to comment and present the final output to the customers
  • Conduct research to support strategic and business development initiatives, leveraging information including external financial databases, legal industry journals, and macro-economic reports to help provide market context to the Firm and our clients
  • Collaborate on projects involving legal and non-legal technology providers to help the team develop cutting-edge and innovative solutions (including sentiment analyses, machine learning, etc.)
  • Advocate the use of effective decision-making techniques and efficiency-enhancing behaviors including Business Analytics, Pricing, Legal Project Management, and Legal AI in your various interventions
  • Contribute to the development of the Market Strategy & Analytics team by improving how we work and share knowledge
  • Cultivate peer-level relationships across Baker McKenzie to facilitate mutual learning and future cooperation
  • For context, the following Market Strategy & Analytics projects are typical of the work with which the Analyst will be expected to assist:
    • supporting three APAC countries with their annual strategy refresh in line with the firm's freshly released Client & Market Strategy - drawing on their changing macroeconomic
    • environments, our competitive position in those markets, and the profit dynamics of their client bases;
    • developing and analyzing options for addressing parts of the firm that have a high reliance on less-profitable clients;
    • assessing the potential impacts of a proposed internal reorganization, including its impact on our competitive position and its relationship to macroeconomic activity;
    • developing, communicating, and updating a suite of tools that enable internal business users to self-serve information pertinent to their business planning cycle, so they may target
    • clients more efficiently, price and staff matters profitably, and track their performance

Technical responsibilities: 

  • Design and implement analyses of historical and real-time data to create summaries supporting the decision-making of senior leadership and Partners, with support from MSA leadership
  • Use statistical methods to identify meaningful relationships among seemingly unrelated and sometimes unstructured sets of data
  • Support the development of a foundational enterprise data analytics platform by studying business and information needs, conferring with users, studying system data flow, data usage patterns, and work processes; and investigating problem areas
  • Gather data from multiple sources and assimilate them into meaningful inputs for Firm databases
  • Continually validate data sources and ensure data grouping and mapping is accurate and clean
  • Create ad-hoc solutions to business problems, including automating manual processes by using VBA, SQL, Tableau, Tableau Prep, Python, Power Pivots, and the full suite of MS Office applications 

 

Skills and Experience:

  • Relevant undergraduate degree (quantitative fields such as Math, Statistics, Computer Science, Chartered Accountancy, or Business strongly preferred) with a demonstration of consistently strong academic performance
  • Strong data manipulation skills
  • Demonstrate existing skills and concepts in a Tableau or similar environment before the conclusion of the probation period including:
    • Joins, blends, and creates custom calculations and level-of-detail calculations; 
    • sequential filtering; 
    • understanding the software's order of operations; 
    • describing the granularity of the view; 
    • creating tabular data; 
    • restructuring data into a form appropriate for the analysis; 
    • handling data with multiple periodicities; 
    • capturing clean data from primary research; 
    • describing the limits of data captured; 
    • optimizing calculation and size efficiency; 
    • efficiently preparing workbooks 
  • Experience in a role that combines numerical analysis, business acumen, and communication skills
  • Experience in an analogous field such as Management Consulting, Data Analytics, Finance, or Corporate Strategy preferred

  • Ability to distil complex information into commercially relevant findings and to draw insights from complex datasets

  • Understanding of corporate transactions and the different market databases available (e.g. Bloomberg, Refinitiv, MergerMarket) preferred
  • Experience in financial systems (e.g. SAP), common business applications (Excel, Access, SQL, Tableau), and programming languages (Python, VBA) strongly preferred
  • First-rate written and oral communication skills in English and the primary business language of your location
  • Ability to withstand pressure during busy periods, while keeping high-quality execution and respect for fast-moving, urgent deadlines
  • Shows a deep and current understanding of political, legal, and economic news to provide context to the work outputs
