The Role

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Senior Associate with 5 - 9 years' experience to join our Energy & Resources group in our Brisbane office. 

This role will focus on supporting the growth and transformation across the energy industry, specifically focusing on Renewables, Clean Energy & Clean Technology transactions and advisory work, Major Projects, and general M&A.  Existing knowledge and experience with the National Electricity Law and Rules will be regarded as advantageous but is not a requirement for this role.

Reporting to lead Energy & Resources Partner, based in Brisbane, you will join the Transactional Practice Group, Energy & Resources team and play a crucial role in providing legal advice and services that will drive and enable clients to achieve their strategic objectives.  Our Energy & Resources team is a tightly knit team and works together closely day-to-day and across the offices.  We work on a range of innovative and novel transactions and projects, and to that end, emphasis is placed on a collaborative and problem solving approach within the team.

The Team

Baker McKenzie's Transactional Practice Group is at the forefront of providing commercially astute advice to major Australian and global companies, fund managers, pension funds and sovereign wealth funds. We have one of Australia's largest dedicated energy, infrastructure and resources teams, with experience in all Australian jurisdictions. In particular, we have one of the largest renewable practices in Australia, if we act for some of the largest global funds and IPPs in their investment into the Australian renewables sector.

We are particularly well known for our high-end mergers and acquisitions. With offices across the globe, we provide our clients with something that no other Australian law firm can offer – a leading Australian practice with access to an integrated global platform.

Some of the group's key areas of specialisation is in complex M&A transactions, privatisations, listed public to private transactions, PPPs, structured finance, major infrastructure (including digital and telco infrastructure), energy, resources and utilities. As the world's largest M&A practice, over 1,300 lawyers execute more cross-border transactions than any other law firm.

Our Energy & Resources team act for participants in all segments of the energy market, including utilities, project developers, government and regulatory bodies and corporate off-takers. We are leaders in advising on project development of clean energy and energy storage projects including renewables, energy contracting, such as Power Purchase Agreements (including Corporate PPAs), and connection agreements, and energy regulatory advice and reform.

Qualifications & Experience

Our ideal candidate would have:

  • 5-9 years' experience in general M&A / Projects;
  • experience in advising on complex contractual arrangements for the energy and/ or resources industry required;
  • prior experience in advising on renewables project (solar or wind) preferred;
  • energy regulatory experience (an advantage);
  • Australian legal qualifications required;
  • relevant experience in a top tier or leading international firm preferred;
  • a strong client service orientation;
  • strong technical, drafting and commercial skills;
  • business development aptitude, interest, and experience;
  • relevant legal qualifications;
  • a strong academic background;
  • excellent analytical, communication, and research skills;
  • a commitment to high work standards and strong attention to detail;
  • an ability to demonstrate initiative and proactivity;
  • an ability to develop strong relationships with clients and to take responsibility for this relationship;
  • an ability to work well in a team environment (including across Australian offices and internationally);
  • a willingness to learn; and
  • a willingness to develop others through mentoring and sharing experiences.
