The Roles

We are currently looking for a Senior Associate or Special Counsel to join our Antitrust and Competition team.

The Team

Competition & Consumer

Our Competition and Consumer team is market recognised for its expertise and includes some of Australia's leading lawyers. We advise clients on the full range of competition law issues, including merger clearance, joint ventures, cartel conduct, exclusive dealing and distribution strategies. Our lawyers represent clients in cartel immunity applications as well as other ACCC investigations. We also advise on Australian Consumer Law issues (including misleading and deceptive conduct, consumer guarantees and unfair contract terms), as well as assisting clients with designing and implementing competition and consumer law compliance programs.

Our Competition and Consumer team is part of the Firm's Global Antitrust & Competition group, recognised by Global Competition Review as a Top 5 Global Elite Practice. We work closely with our global colleagues and are able to draw on the resources, combined knowledge and experience of this leading global practice. As part of this global group, we have the privilege of being instructed by major national and international organisations in large-scale, complex matters across a range of industries and disciplines.

Our Competition and Consumer team sits within our broader Dispute Resolution practice group. Baker McKenzie's Dispute Resolution Group remains at the forefront of the Australian litigation and dispute resolution landscape and is continually entrusted with many of this country's most complex and sensitive matters requiring innovative litigation strategies, strategic negotiation, risk management and resolution.

What we're looking for -

Our ideal candidate would have:

  • A 5+PQE lawyer with excellent academic credentials (economists also considered!)
  • Current experience in the Competition department of a leading firm - or competition authority
  • First-rate technical skills needed to support the client work of the department
  • Commerciality and demonstrable business development experience
  • Excellent written communication and drafting skills
  • Initiative and proactivity
  • Maturity and gravitas
  • Strong service orientation - a "client first" culture
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with clients and to take responsibility for this relationship
  • High work standards
  • Flexible work practices
  • Outstanding communication skills and the ability to adapt style as required
  • Ability to work well in both a team and individually
