Dr. Péter Mezei LL.M.

Péter Mezei is a senior attorney in the Antitrust & Competition Practice Group of the Budapest office, advising clients on all areas of EU and Hungarian competition law. He has nearly 20 years of experience in defending clients in antitrust cases before the Hungarian Competition Authority, the European Commission and both before EU and Hungarian courts. Péter also regularly advises clients in EU and Hungarian merger clearance procedures, as well as internal compliance investigations, including multijurisdictional document review projects.

Before joining Baker McKenzie, from 2007 to 2018, Peter worked at another international law firm in the positions of junior associate and then senior associate / manager, and from 2014 to 2018, he also served as head of the firm's competition law practice.

Péter gained extensive experience in several industries, in particular retail and FMCG, pharmaceuticals, automotive, energy, public utilities and public services. He has a deep understanding of the specific antitrust and commercial issues in distribution, as he regularly advises clients on vertical restrictions, unfair commercial practices (UCP), unfair trading practices (UTP) and abuse of buyer power, as well as in the field of consumer protection.

His recent experience includes advising major automotive suppliers in regard of vertical issues, advising pharmaceutical companies on parallel trade and distribution issues; performing a full-scale internal antitrust audit at a large industrial manufacturer, representing a major energy infrastructure company in a cartel investigation, as well as representing a major retail chain in several UCP cases before the HCA and courts.
