Biography

Julia Hemmings is a partner in Baker McKenzie’s technology team based in London. Julia leads the Digital Commerce, Advertising and Marketing practice.

Julia joined the Firm in 2001 and also worked in the Sydney office from March 2006 to March 2008 and was promoted to partner in 2019.

Practice Focus

Julia advises on a broad range of matters including consumer protection compliance, e-commerce and platform regulation issues with a focus on consumer transactions, particularly in the retail sector and on the technology side of fast-moving consumer products. She has extensive experience of advising and negotiating supply chain agreements including distribution and agency.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Providing strategic advice to international retailers on their EU rollout of both online and retail consumer sales channels, including commercial agreements, recent changes to the UK & EU legislative framework for consumer protection, marketing/advertising regulations and privacy issues.
  • Assisting clients with UK CMA and EU CPC consumer regulatory investigations, most recently in relation to green claims, subscriptions, fake reviews and the enforcement of consumer protection laws in the use of generative AI.
  • Advising on the regulation of retail sales across EMEA including website compliance, pricing practices and promotional activities regulations for digital platforms and luxury goods retailers.
  • Advising on local compliance issues on a global basis with particular focus on highly regulated sectors including F&B, finance, alcohol and ESG.
