Biography

James trained and qualified at a major international law firm before joining Baker McKenzie in July 2017.

James has completed two secondments at a tier one global bank, sitting in its trade finance legal team. He has also spent time in Dubai, gaining experience in Sharia-compliant financing structures.

Practice Focus

James advises lenders, borrowers and sponsors as a general banking lawyer. He has particular focus on trade and commodity finance, including in full and limited recourse receivables financing, supply chain financing and borrowing base facilities.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Acting for a Canadian infrastructure fund on the refinancing of its acquisition of a portfolio of residential and commercial solar power systems in the UK.

  • Advising the 13 bank lender syndicate in relation to the 2017 EUR 4.5 billion acquisition of the Ista group (one of the world’s leading energy efficiency providers) by a joint venture between CK Infrastructure Holdings Limited and Cheung Kong Property Holdings Limited.

  • Acting for a major European football club on a buyer-centric receivables financing.

  • Advising a European bank on a bank guarantees issuance facility covering obligations under gas transportation agreements.

  • Acting for Standard Chartered Bank in relation to a Sinosure covered equipment financing, and commercial facility, to a large Bangladeshi corporate borrower.

  • Acting for a UK clearing bank on a USD 300 million LC issuance facility made available to a major Asian airline.

  • Advising a major trade finance bank on its template supply chain finance documentation.

  • Acting for a UK clearing bank on a multi-jurisdictional trade instruments due diligence exercise.

  • Acting for a bank on a multi-jurisdictional supply chain finance due diligence exercise.
