Biography

Roberto Cantú-Dessommes joined Baker McKenzie in 2011, and is currently an associate in the Firm's Transactional Practice Group. His background includes work for a law firm in San Diego, California and work as in-house counsel for a transnational company in Monterrey, Mexico.

Practice Focus

Roberto focuses his practice on construction projects across multiple industries, locations and geographical regions. He represents domestic and international developers, owners, contractors, architects and engineering firms in all phases of construction projects. Roberto is experienced advising developers, owners, lenders and contractors on large-scale construction projects. These include renewables and storage projects as part of energy transition. He also has extensive experience drafting and negotiating construction and related projects contracts, including EPC, EPCM, Equipment Supply, LTSAs, O&Ms, design and consultancy appointments, construction contracts, construction management and design/build arrangements. As well as drafting and advising on bespoke contracts, he regularly advices clients on AIA documents.

Roberto also has significant experience representing foreign entities doing business in Mexico, in the drafting, development and implementation of commercial, real estate and construction contracts.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Represents Firm's major client in connection with its worldwide multimillion-dollar construction projects, including drafting and negotiating complex design and construction documents using various pricing and project delivery models (design-bid-build, design-build, construction management, etc.).
  • Assists several key clients in relation to standardization of global design and construction templates to be used for projects around the world, as well as development of legal process improvements resulting in efficiencies and consistencies.
  • Represented a key client in connection with several innovative modular construction projects of unique real estate buildings in the Pacific Islands.
  • Assisted major client in the establishment of its new heavy truck manufacturing campus in Monterrey, Mexico (the company's largest, newest and cutting-edge technology heavy truck manufacturing operation in the world), involving the development of a 187,000 m2 (2,012,851 sq.ft.) state-of-the art industrial facility, including assistance on the drafting and negotiation of a FIDIC agreement, and ancillary agreements for required infrastructure.
  • Represents developers, contractors and equipment suppliers on contracts in connection with the development of utility scale renewable projects in the US, including equipment supply, construction, LTSA and O&M contracts for utility scale solar, battery storage and wind projects across the US.
  • Represents foreign entities doing business in Mexico, in the drafting, development and implementation of commercial, real estate and construction contracts.
  • Represents clients in the negotiation and preparation of tailored industrial and commercial lease agreements in Mexico.
