Biography

Ben Bakalovic is an associate in the Transactional practice group and member of the German Energy & Infrastructure practice at the Berlin office of Baker McKenzie. His previous experiences include time as a researcher at Humboldt University in Berlin, the German Bundestag and the World Bank in Washington, DC, USA. Ben spent his legal traineeship in the State of Brandenburg with postings in the energy law unit of the State Ministry for the Economy and Energy, the public law practice group of an international law firm in Berlin, and the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium. He studied law and political science at Heidelberg University.

Practice Focus

Ben advises domestic and international clients on transactions and project developments in the energy and infrastructure sector, with a particular focus on renewable energy, storage and related infrastructure projects. His practice covers all stages of project execution, including structuring, due diligence and transactional implementation. In addition, Ben supports clients on regulatory aspects and contractual arrangements in the context of large-scale infrastructure projects. He regularly assists with issues at the intersection of project development, financing and public law.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Advised an international investor on regulatory and legal risks in connection with a potential minority investment in a German data center portfolio owned by a multinational holding company.
  • Advised a multinational investment bank on changes to Germany’s national emissions trading scheme and subsequent regulatory impacts on a proposed trading strategy.
  • Advised a project developer on environmental and permitting aspects for the acquisition of two battery energy storage systems projects in Germany.
  • Advised a multinational oil and natural gas trader on German gas storage law in relation to the storing of mandatory gas reserves and cross-border transfers of gas in terms of crisis.
  • Advised a multinational industrial group on German nuclear law, planning, investment and regulatory constraints in connection with a potential investment in a European nuclear reactor developer.
