Adam Aft, an AI attorney and global head of Baker McKenzie's Technology Transactions group, spoke with The Wall Street Journal about the White House’s newly released recommendations for US artificial intelligence policy, which favor a light-touch regulatory approach to accelerate domestic AI development and avoid a patchwork of state-level rules. The framework urges Congress to rely on existing laws, limit the creation of new agencies or regulations, and leave some of the most complex legal questions to the courts.

Adam noted that the proposal underscores how central AI has become to the administration’s economic and national security strategy, reflecting a strong belief that maintaining US leadership in AI requires speed and flexibility over restrictive regulation. While the recommendations are nonbinding and would require congressional action, they represent Washington’s clearest signal yet in favor of streamlined, nationally consistent AI rules. Adam’s key takeaway for companies is to stay the course and focus on building adaptable governance frameworks that can evolve alongside a rapidly shifting AI regulatory environment.
