Biography

Owen is an associate in Baker McKenzie London's Dispute Resolution team. Owen has a broad disputes practice and has recently worked primarily in commercial litigation.

Prior to joining Baker McKenzie, Owen worked as a junior barrister at a leading commercial Chambers in New Zealand and before that worked as an assistant crown counsel at New Zealand's Crown Law Office and as a judge's clerk (judicial assistant) in the Supreme Court of New Zealand.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Acting for an international bank as one of the defendants to claims brought by the administrators of a collapsed private healthcare fund both before the High Court of England and Wales and ADGM in a multibillion-dollar claim. The claims relate to a massive alleged fraud which is said to have resulted in the collapse of the group.
  • Acting for the Claimants, a Kuwait educational management company, in DIFC commercial litigation in relation to a post-M&A dispute about whether a hold back amount was payable under a contract for the sale and purchase of a company that owned several private schools.
  • Acting for the defendant property developer, a related-party partnership to the company in liquidation in relation to insolvent transaction proceedings. 
  • Acting for the New Zealand Transport Agency in high value public works litigation.
  • Acting for the Director-General of Health of New Zealand in proceedings challenging the legality of New Zealand's COVID-19 restrictions in the March and April 2020.
  • Acting for the Commissioner of Inland Revenue of New Zealand in a series of test cases regarding the deductibility of amounts spent by property developers repairing "leaky" buildings.
