Biography

Dino Wilkinson leads Baker McKenzie’s Commercial practice group in the Gulf and Levant region. He is recognised as one of the leading technology lawyers in the region with top-tier team and individual rankings in Chambers Global Guide and the Legal 500.

Practice Focus

Dino Wilkinson is a partner based in the Abu Dhabi office. He has been operating in the Gulf for nearly 20 years and heads Baker McKenzie’s regional Commercial practice group. His areas of focus include technology law and transactions, data and cyber, and intellectual property.

Dino is a trusted adviser to regional and multinational corporate clients on IT and outsourcing transactions, digital transformation, emerging technology regulation and data privacy laws. He has also been involved in the development of laws and regulation in this field, including the drafting of e-commerce, data sharing and privacy legislation.

Dino’s experience spans all types of technology-related contractual and compliance issues, including data protection, artificial intelligence, digital media and content.

He is named in the Legal 500’s Hall of Fame for his longstanding involvement in market-leading work and described as a ‘real business partner’ who understands the industries he operates in.

Representative Legal Matters

Technology Regulation

  • Advised several of the world’s leading technology companies on law and regulatory policy in the Gulf, Levant and North Africa, including support on discussions with national regulators and governments on data and content regulation.
  • Advised a global telecommunications networking equipment supplier on a range of legal and regulatory issues connected with the provision of products and services in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
  • Advised a luxury electric vehicle manufacturer on data-related regulatory issues connected with the deployment of connected cars across various GCC countries.

Technology Transactions

  • Advised a property development company on the outsourcing of the group finance function to a third party service provider in a deal involving the transfer of up to 200 staff across three service centres.
  • Advised an electronics distribution company on the establishment of an e-commerce marketplace for B2B and B2C sales, including the development of seller and buyer terms, privacy notices and associated regulatory advice.
  • Advised a government-owned artificial intelligence development holding company on an assessment of the regulatory regimes in several international markets as part of project to build out AI infrastructure in multiple locations.
  • Advised an artificial intelligence company on a substantial engagement with a state-owned entity in Saudi Arabia to deliver AI infrastructure and solutions.

Data & Cyber

  • Advised a multinational food processing company on a data protection compliance project to align its local operations with privacy laws in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman.
  • Advised multiple clients on handling and reporting data breach incidents in line with mandatory requirements under various data protection regimes.
  • Advised a national ICT regulator on the development of legislation to regulate the concept of data embassies in the jurisdiction.
  • Advised Dubai International Financial Centre Authority on the drafting of its Data Protection Law (DIFC Law No.5 of 2020) and associated guidance.

Intellectual Property

  • Advised an Australian bakery on the expansion of its brand protection strategy to support market entry in the UAE and other Gulf countries.
  • Advised an industrial security company on a patent filing programme to secure protection for a portfolio of smart mobility and traffic safety solutions.
  • Advised a luxury goods manufacturer on available actions against parallel imports into GCC countries.
