Biography

Valentin Weigel is a member of Baker McKenzie’s international trade, compliance and sustainability practice in Berlin.

Before joining Baker McKenzie in 2026, he practiced for more than two years at another major international law firm, advising multinational companies on supply chain compliance, sustainability reporting, internal and external investigations, and corporate governance. He also advised listed companies and private equity investors on compliance matters in M&A transactions.

Valentin studied law in Heidelberg and Barcelona and completed his legal clerkship at the Regional Court of Leipzig. He holds an LL.M. in International Legal Studies from New York University.

Practice Focus

Valentin focuses on international trade compliance, supply chain compliance and sustainability regulation.

He advises clients on sanctions and export control compliance, investment screening, and the design of effective internal compliance systems. He regularly assists clients with internal and external investigations, audits and self-disclosures involving export control and sanctions matters.

In addition, he has significant experience in supporting clients across sectors in navigating the rapidly evolving field of ESG legislation. This includes providing strategic advice on sustainability matters, ensuring compliance with supply chain legislation, as well as establishing and improving corporate governance structures and internal compliance programs.

  • Advised multiple textile companies on LkSG compliance, including human rights and environmental risk assessments and correspondence with the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control.*
  • Advised a global defense company on implementing EU and German supply chain due diligence requirements, including the development of governance structures.*
  • Advised multiple US-based tech companies on CSDDD readiness as well as reporting obligations under the CSRD.*
  • Advised a global hospitality company on its LkSG compliance program.*
  • Advised coffee manufacturers and companies across the automotive sector on compliance with EUDR.*
  • Advised multiple companies across various industries on designing sustainability reporting strategies aligned with the EU and international reporting standards.*
  • Assisted private equity investors in legal due diligence of target companies’ compliance systems, including anti-money laundering, anti-bribery, anti-corruption and supply chain compliance frameworks.*
  • Advised a multinational manufacturer on product compliance obligations under the EU Batteries Regulation and the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.*
  • Advised several German companies on establishing corporate governance structures and compliance management systems, including policies, training frameworks and whistleblowing procedures.*
  • Provided public policy advice to US and EU companies on regulatory developments across the EU legislative landscape.*
