Prior to joining Baker McKenzie in November 2018, Joanna served as a judge in Taipei District Court (2000-2005 and 2008-2011), Xinbei District Court (2005-2008) and the Intellectual Property Court (2011-2014), where she gained extensive experience in various types of civil, commercial, criminal and intellectual property (including patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets) cases. She was also formerly in the specialized construction tribunal during her service in Taipei District Court. 

Joanna worked as a research judge in the Judicial Yuan from 2014 to 2017, participating in the discussions and negotiations on numerous amendments to various laws on behalf of the Judicial Yuan, with a focus on legislation concerning economic affairs, antitrust, intellectual property, finance, telecommunications as well as health and welfare. 

She also focuses on data protection law and GDPR, and is a Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E). 

Practice Focus

Joanna focuses on dispute resolution, intellectual property (patent, copyright, trademark, etc.), trade secret, TMT, data protection as well as antitrust and competition.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Acted for a world-renowned luxury brand in a trademark civil case in the appellate court, and successfully helped persuade the court to reverse the lower court judgment (as well as differ from all previous unfavorable decisions made by authorities in the criminal proceedings ), and not only rule in favor of the client, but also unprecedentedly grant our claim to order publication of excerpt of court judgment in up to three newspapers.

  • Acted for a tech company in a trade secret misappropriation case, and successfully persuaded the court to not only grant our motion to perpetuate evidence, but also conduct it in a rare way of 'disk mirroring' the laptop of the former employee so as to recover deleted files.

  • Acted for a global leading IC design company in a non-compete lawsuit against its former employee, and helped get a preliminary injunction within time shorter than average.

  • Acted for a renowned group in defending a trademark infringement case and successfully persuaded the court to rule in the client’s favor.

  • Acted for a global leading semiconductor company in an administrative lawsuit.

  • Acted for a renowned bank in a civil lawsuit against another bank.

  • Reviewed and revised the film production and licensing agreement for a US biotech company and provided legal advice.

  • Handled copyright license matter and drafted the English publishing agreement for a Taiwan drug company.

  • Provided legal opinion on antitrust issues of the license agreement for a world renowned Japanese cultural and creative company.
