Biography

Matt is a partner in our London tax team, advising on UK and international corporate tax matters. Matt joined Baker McKenzie in 2015 from another leading global firm where he trained and qualified. Matt spent a year on secondment to our Washington, DC office in 2018 and was made partner in London in 2020.

Practice Focus

Matt specialises in cross-border M&A, investment structuring, debt financing and real estate transactions. He is also experienced in securitisations, corporate reorganisations, and helping clients navigate complex tax authority enquiries.

Matt advises a broad client base, including multinational groups, financial institutions, asset managers, fund sponsors and sovereign wealth funds. Matt is also a member of our Global Private Investment & Family Office team that provides best-in-class investment solutions for family offices, founders, and other sources of private capital.

  • Advised ATP Media in relation to investment from SURJ Sports Investment (the sports investment arm of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund).
  • Advised Aurelius on the sale of airline catering business LSG Asia Pacific, to a Japanese consortium.
  • Advised a consortium of lenders on the financing and refinancing of the Battersea Power Station redevelopment in London.
  • Advised Blue Horizon Investors on their USD 500 million Miami hotel acquisition and luxury hotel development project.
  • Advised Citibank in relation to various real estate financing projects.
  • Advised Equinix on its USD 1 billion EMEA hyperscale data centre joint venture with GIC.
  • Advised Fattal Hotel Group’s Leonardo Hotels on the acquisition of Hotel Saint in Aldgate, London from affiliates of Cerberus Capital Management and Highgate Hospitality.
  • Advised Hitachi on the USD 11 billion acquisition of ABB's power grids business in over 100 jurisdictions (the largest-ever acquisition by a Japanese industrial company), and various post-closing matters for newly formed Hitachi Energy.
  • Advised Labora Group on the structuring and establishment of its UK investment arm, Labora Capital Partners.
  • Advised Lyft on the acquisition of TBR Global, a UK-headquartered chauffeur and executive ground transportation business with global operations.
  • Advised Manzanita on the tax structuring of its disposal of a majority stake in luxury fragrance and beauty brand, Byredo, to Puig.
  • Advised Mapletree in relation to its GBP 560 million acquisition of a UK commercial business park.
  • Advised Novator on the structuring and bond market financing of its USD 1 billion telecoms business venture.
  • Advised Silver Lake and Software AG on the carve-out and disposal of its Alfabet business to Main Capital Partners.
  • Advised Tata AutoComp on the acquisition of IAC Slovakia from the IAC Group, and the majority acquisition of Artifex from Jaguar Land Rover.
