Biography

Juan Pablo is a senior associate of the Dispute Resolution team at Baker McKenzie's Santiago Office. He has over 10 years of experience in complex litigation with a focus on international commercial and investor-state arbitration. Prior to joining Baker McKenzie, Juan Pablo worked at top-tiered law firms in Santiago and London.

Juan Pablo holds an LL.M. from Harvard Law School and graduated first of his class at Universidad de los Andes. He has lectured at universities in Santiago and abroad, and published academic articles in internationally indexed law journals.

Practice Focus

Juan Pablo focuses his practice in dispute resolution, with an emphasis on domestic and international arbitration. He has represented clients in arbitration proceedings governed by major institutional rules including SCC, ICC, ICSID, UNCITRAL and CAM Santiago, across a range of industries including energy, infrastructure, public concessions, and regulated markets, among others.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Advised a Central American State in an investment treaty arbitration under ICSID rules, arising from a public works concession contract.
  • Advised a French company in an international commercial arbitration under the SCC Rules, arising from a contractual dispute related to the construction of a hydroelectric power plant in Chile.
  • Advised a Spanish investor in an investment treaty arbitration under UNCITRAL rules against a Latin American state, arising from the Government’s decision to seize and liquidate a local power company.
  • Advised a Chilean mining company in arbitration under the CAM Santiago rules against a hydroelectric power generation company in a dispute over a Power Purchase Agreement.
  • Advised a Swedish multinational construction company in arbitrations against owner and subcontractor regarding a USD 200 Million EPC contract.
  • Advised a Korean-owned refinery company in construction arbitration against main contractor and, separately, civil lawsuits brought upon by other subcontractors countrywide.
  • Advised an international oil company in local proceedings in Colombia in relation to the payment of royalties arising from oil and gas production.
