Biography

Daniel is a local principal with the Dispute Resolution Practice Group in Singapore. He is accredited by the Singapore Academy of Law as an Accredited Specialist in Building and Construction Law.

Prior to practising law, Daniel was a mechanical and marine engineer with the Republic of Singapore Navy, with over five years of experience in project management relating to the maintenance and retrofitting projects for submarines.

Daniel was recognised by The Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2023 as a "Rising Star" in the category of “Construction: Local firms in Singapore”, and was also awarded "Rising Star of the Year – Construction and Real Estate" at The Legal 500 Southeast Asia Awards 2023.

Practice Focus

Daniel focuses on the law relating to construction, engineering and technology projects including building, renovation/fit out, manufacturing, turn key, transportation, supply chain, energy, oil and gas projects.

Daniel supports his clients with drafting of the suite of contracts and related documentation for projects (either bespoke or based on standard form construction contracts such as SIA, REDAS, PSSCOC, FIDIC, JCT, NEC etc.), as well as the reviewing of tender bids and negotiations to close out and handling of legal issues throughout the projects (such as claims for outstanding payment, additional costs, losses and expenses, omissions, variations, delay and/or disruption issues such as extensions of time and prolongation costs, suspension, acceleration, inspection and quality assurance, defects, insurance, indemnities, termination, SOP Act payment claim / payment response / adjudication procedures, final account closure, general business law queries etc.).

Daniel also assists his clients with resolution of disputes that arise in their projects – through arbitration, litigation, adjudication or other alternative means of dispute resolution such as mediation, expert determination or neutral evaluation.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Represented a major Cambodian company and key individuals in respect of claims by and counter claims against its contractor in an SIAC arbitration arising out of the construction of a major landmark development in Cambodia.

  • Represented an international Korean construction company in respect of claims by and counter claims against its façade contractor in ICC arbitrations arising out of the construction of a major mixed development in Singapore.

  • Represented an international French manufacturing company in claims against its employer in an ICADR arbitration arising out of the construction of a railway infrastructure project in India.

  • Represented a major German manufacturing and electronics company in the Singapore Court of Appeal and Singapore High Court in defending claims arising out of the fabrication of various structural components for an offshore oil & gas project in Indonesia.

  • Represented a major US-based technology company in the Singapore Court of Appeal and Singapore High Court in resisting an application to set aside an arbitral award.

  • Represented an international Korean construction firm in an adjudication under the Singapore Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act in relation to its claims against its employer arising out of the construction of a railway infrastructure project in Singapore.

  • Advised a Korean multinational construction company on the drafting of its suite of project agreements in relation to the construction of a hydrogen manufacturing plant in Korea.

  • Advised a Korean multinational construction company on the drafting of its Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) turnkey contract in relation to the construction of a combined cycle gas fired electrical generation facility in Dominican Republic.

  • Advised various world leading multinational corporations, media companies, cosmetics companies, IT companies, food and retail companies, sportswear companies, social media companies, technology equipment manufacturers, insurance underwriters, network automation and security companies, data management companies, consulting firms, banks, financial institutions, consumer healthcare, religious entities, filtration and purification products suppliers, day surgical centres, pharmaceutical companies and payment services companies on the drafting of their contracts for fitting out and renovation works for their office premises and stores (e.g., build only, design and build, consultancy agreements etc.) both in Singapore and globally.

  • Advised a Blockchain company based in New Zealand in relation to the drafting of its suite of contracts for its cryptocurrency projects.
