Biography

Paul Gielen is an associate in Baker McKenzie’s Amsterdam office. He joined Baker McKenzie in September 2024 and was admitted to the Dutch Bar in February 2023. Prior to joining Baker McKenzie, he worked at an Amsterdam-based boutique law firm specializing in European sanctions and export controls. 

Practice Focus

His practice focuses on EU trade and compliance matters, with a particular emphasis on trade sanctions, export controls, and foreign direct investment. He advises multinational clients on internal investigations, regulatory inquiries, voluntary self-disclosures, and the design and implementation of compliance programs. His experience enables him to provide practical and strategic advice to clients.

  • Advised companies on their divestment from Russia.
  • Audited companies on their compliance with export controls and restrictive measures, including the review of both their internal processes and transactions.
  • Advised on international trade compliance and export controls matters, including sanctions screening, assessing restricted party risks, reviewing customer and transaction data, and coordinating due diligence steps across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Advised companies on the setting up of their internal trade compliance programs.
  • Provided training sessions on trade compliance matters for the benefit of companies involved in pharmaceuticals.
