Biography

Janek is an associate in the Baker McKenzie Dispute Resolution team, based in London. Janek has experience acting for parties in a broad range of commercial, construction and investment treaty disputes.

Janek joined Baker McKenzie as a Trainee Solicitor in September 2018 and qualified into the Dispute Resolution Department in September 2020. During his training contract, Janek was seconded to the International Arbitration team at Baker McKenzie Habib Al Mulla in Dubai. Prior to joining Baker McKenzie, Janek was a trainee case manager at the ICC Court of Arbitration. He acts for and against states and state bodies, with particular experience in the energy sector and large infrastructure projects. He has acted on investor-state disputes under ICSID, UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules, as well as under the ICC Arbitration Rules.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Acting for a State in ICSID proceedings regarding alleged violations of a contract concluded with a local company, involving admissibility issues, issues of jurisdiction as well as alleged breaches of contract.

  • Acting for a company and its shareholder in a complex post M&A ICC arbitration in the banking sector.

  • Acting for a global healthcare company defending multimillion DIAC arbitration proceedings brought by its former distributor in the Middle East.

  • Acting for a contractor defending ICC proceedings brought by its former subcontractor in connection with an offshore oil & gas project in the Middle East.

  • Advising a major power generation company on debt claims over investments in Southern Africa.
