Baker McKenzie, in response to growth in its Melbourne Employment Law Practice has hired new Special Counsel, Marie Costa. Marie, previously at a large commercial firm, has extensive experience advising on regulatory matters, with a specialisation in workplace health and safety.

Marie has consistently been recognised in her field in the Asia Pacific region and is valued by clients for her technical knowledge, sound judgement and pragmatic advice. 
 
Marie supports clients with a range of matters including critical incident response, investigations, prosecutions, coronial inquests, legislative compliance, risk management and training. Marie also advises on public and private inquiries, including Royal Commissions, Boards of Inquiry and Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission investigations.

Prior to joining her previous firm over a decade ago, Marie practised as a senior criminal defence lawyer and also worked as a lawyer at the Supreme Court of Victoria in its criminal appellate jurisdiction. 
 
Marie’s criminal law experience is invaluable to her workplace health and safety practice, which operates under a criminal law regime.

On 1 July 2025, Baker McKenzie elevated one partner, eight special counsel and 14 senior associates in Australia as part of its global promotions round, as well as added a senior lawyer from Norton Rose Fulbright to the partnership.
