Francis is an associate in Baker McKenzie's Tax team in Sydney.
Practice Focus
Francis' practice focus is on Australian income tax advice and planning for large domestic and multinational corporations on Australian and cross-border tax issues. Francis has worked with clients across a range of industries including consumer goods, online media, financial institutions, healthcare, renewable energy, public infrastructure and not-for-profits. Francis also has experience in helping clients manage audit and tax controversy issues with the Australian Taxation Office. In addition, Francis has several years of tax advisory experience from a global Big Four professional services firm.
Representative Legal Matters
- Advised multinational corporations on complex disputes with revenue authorities involving cross-border issues, including undertaking document discovery, making submissions, preparing briefs for senior counsel and managing process with revenue authorities.
- Advised large multinational clients on various tax matters, including international tax issues, inbound and outbound tax planning, capital gains tax, withholding taxes and the application of anti-avoidance provisions.
- Advised financial institutions and corporate clients on tax issues relevant to domestic and cross-border financing arrangements.
- Advised large consumer goods clients on the application of Australia's hybrid mismatch rules to their global groups.
- Advised global companies and private equity funds on the Australian income tax implications arising from restructures, acquisitions, divestments and public listings in the healthcare, consumer goods and leisure industries.
- Assist clients in responding to notices issued by revenue authorities to produce documents and information.
- Assisted government clients and private sector consortiums on tax matters relating to major public infrastructure projects.
- Advised investors on income tax issues relating to acquisitions and divestments of renewable energy assets.
- Advised pro bono clients on applying for tax exemptions and deductible gift recipient endorsement.
